You read the book, worth recommending? Is it a good overall dramatic novel, or overly religious one?
It's highly recommendable. I mean, it's obviously dealing with religion, and God's silence is the main question of novel, but I wouldn't call it overly religious. Hell, I'm not religious and I loved the novel. But for someone like RUS, who isn't able to relate to people believing in God, it's probably a frustrating experience. :D But it's a great story about 17th century missionaries in Japan and a look at how far the missionaries are willing to go for their faith. The overall plot is really interesting too. You have to remember that this was a time in Japan where people were tortured and killed for being Christian, so following the missionaries in Japan is quite nerve-wrecking and brutal at times. And Neeson's character is based on a real person, so if you're interested in history, that makes it even better.

I remember he was a big deal when he was young, bit of a hit with the ladies, but didn't notice him around much in recent years.

Just read that he is trying to be a reggae singer now, called 卍Line (Manji Line)
That seems really random. :D Seems like an odd cast, but you haven't criticized anyone, so that's good, I guess. :D

Nice, I love almost everything history related and more so Asian (Samurai period and Mongol history in particular) so was intrigued as is, even if most books I read of region/continent is in the eyes of a westerner (Shogun, Taipan etc). But corious if it was just too much of nonstop sermons or if the book had more meat then that.

You should definitely read it then. It's not very long either. Around 200 pages.

The plot sounds interesting enough.

@Post Ironic are you familiar with the Dr. Mabuse films? Why every time a new list of best directors come up Lang is always overlooked? His work paved the way for so much that came after. Truly genius.
I love the Dr. Mabuse films. Klein-Rogge always portrayed a great villain. And Fritz Lang was a genius. I'm a huge fan of his silent films, and even some of his later Noirs and Westerns were pretty good.
