It's highly recommendable. I mean, it's obviously dealing with religion, and God's silence is the main question of novel, but I wouldn't call it overly religious. Hell, I'm not religious and I loved the novel. But for someone like RUS, who isn't able to relate to people believing in God, it's probably a frustrating experience.

But it's a great story about 17th century missionaries in Japan and a look at how far the missionaries are willing to go for their faith. The overall plot is really interesting too. You have to remember that this was a time in Japan where people were tortured and killed for being Christian, so following the missionaries in Japan is quite nerve-wrecking and brutal at times. And Neeson's character is based on a real person, so if you're interested in history, that makes it even better.
