
By doing what, exactly? Censorship, limiting free speech? The government can't solve all problems.
But the fact is that the government already actively influences their people in a ideological and cultural way without any censorship or stuff like that. Only that those cultures and ideologies are simply taken for commonly agreed principles and taken as so obvious that it's normally not realised as such, such as the promotion of democracy, tolerance, freedom of speech,...just take a look at what's taught in schools (by decision of various governments), or at publically sponsored events. The argument that the state shouldn't interfere or try to change gun culture because the government doesn't meddle with ideological affairs doesn't make sense as it already is in a large scale actively doing so, and I'd even argue that there cannot be a government that keeps out of shaping the ideologies of its people.

If that was true, the majority of gun owners would already be in jail. The vast majority of gun issues stem from liberal cities where criminals obtain weapons illegally.
