By doing what, exactly? Censorship, limiting free speech? The government can't solve all problems.

Way to completely miss my point, come on, it was obvious that I didn't mean it that way.

But the fact is that the government already actively influences their people in a ideological and cultural way without any censorship or stuff like that. Only that those cultures and ideologies are simply taken for commonly agreed principles and taken as so obvious that it's normally not realised as such, such as the promotion of democracy, tolerance, freedom of speech,...just take a look at what's taught in schools (by decision of various governments), or at publically sponsored events. The argument that the state shouldn't interfere or try to change gun culture because the government doesn't meddle with ideological affairs doesn't make sense as it already is in a large scale actively doing so, and I'd even argue that there cannot be a government that keeps out of shaping the ideologies of its people.

If that was true, the majority of gun owners would already be in jail. The vast majority of gun issues stem from liberal cities where criminals obtain weapons illegally.

How the hell would you come to that conclusion from my post? And of course gun legislation wouldn't solve all issues, or even come close to that. Crime rates have little to do with that, but the number of gun crimes/accidents outside of organised crime could be drastically reduced, and with a time lag, the number of gun related deaths in crime would decrease as well.

Hood, etc., etc., and none of that warrants any government concern nor action.

But take one crazy beyotch who posts her allegiance to ISIS on Facebook the day of a murder spree -- even if ISIS has no frigging idea who she is -- and suddenly my president is giving national speeches and Congress is getting involved?

There would have been something very wrong with this picture if the ISIS links had not been there, that is, if the couple had killed their victims due to work related issues/etc but still were given special attention on the basis of their race/religion. Shooting in the US is always getting a lot of attention anyway (because we need to think we do something about a problem, so we talk about it), and when the reason behind it is not "cultural", then it's understandable it's getting more attention. At least I can understand that. Let's say "n" people get killed every year in Iran in road accidents. Then this angry guy takes his car to the street running over a few killing them. He's using a means very much normalized and frequent (just like mass shooting is in the US, right?), but for different reasons, exposing an entirely different problem. Not the best analogy but I'd understand if it got special attention.

I wonder if the US has more retards than anywhere else in the world. That's essentially the point gun enthusiasts are making, right? It's mental illness, not guns. So here's the thing I don't get. I'm fairly sure that percentage wise most European countries have as much retards as the US. They have less guns though. So wouldn't it make more sense to look at the guns, rather than mental illness?

The way I see it is that the body-count carnage is acceptable and the norm. But heaven forbid somebody make a post on Facebook, because that means we're now in actual danger and the feds must get involved.
