but it could be argued so does gigi, and gig has been more consistent in the past years
The award is given for the last year, not the past years.

It is simple; Gigi played just 18 games for Juve last season, Cannavaro all 38 games, they both had great WC, Cannavaro is in biggest world team and Gigi is in Serie B now... what more explanation do you need?

Buffon has made a huge sacrifice to stay with the club he loves. He has shown great honesty, loyalty & respect by remaining in Juve. After the FIFA Player of the Tournament scandal where it was awarded to an aging icon with no respect for his opponents or the rules & spirit of the game, France Football should seek to sennd a message that integrity is valued above all else, that love of your club is paramount. In all other areas, Gigi & Canna are about even, so give it to Buffon, the worlds absolute best in his position, no other player in the running can claim that honour.

forza Gigi!

well, I just wonder: if Canna's played still in Juve that'd be the same point of view???

They don´t give Golden Ball for loyalty and honesty, they give it for performance.

well, nobody doubts abt Gigi's the best keeper in the world, he deserves GB but Canna too. I just guess if Canna still played in Juve everybody'd be happy he'd win GB but now he's in Real and he's a "traitor" for many fans. I'll be glad if Canna win it cuz' he's really great player, cuz' he's italian and cuz' he's not stricker (I'm tired of these permanent strickers and middlefielders with GB).

well, if on of these two wins gb, i'd be happy for them. their best perfomances were while being juve players. so it doesn't really matter for me who wins it, the most important thing is that it goes to one of them

I'm totally cool with Canna winning it, but seeing Gigi making round of honor with the Golden Ball in his hands around Olimpico (3 years after Golden Pavel did) would be unforgetable :)

You're missing my point. What I was trying to say is that although both Canna & Gigi had fantastic seasons last year, France Football has the chance to send the message that FIFA didn't when awarding the Player of the Tournament at the world cup. FIFA had a choice to award their prize to Zidane or Canna. Choosing Canna would have been a victory for REAL football, not Real Madrid & their "Galactico's" philosophy, that having great players who sell shirts is more important than who wins. FIFA, as usual made a balls of it, & gave the damn thing to Zidane, who will be remembered for a brutal final act, a great footballer, who threw it all away because he couldn't take a few playground insults.

The same decision is now faced by France Football. Both Gigi & Canna had great seasons, proving to be the best in the world in their respective positions. Italy could not have won the WC without either, both proved vital at different times. Juve would not have lifted lo scudetto without both in unison. Gigi returned to his best for the crucial run in, Canna probably our most consistant player all season. The two are inseperable on the field, therefore (and here is my original point) it is down to the morals of both men. Gigi stayed when leaving was the easy option, showed honesty, loyalty, respect & devotion. Canna simply took the money & ran.

Over to you France Football, Do The Right Thing.............

Isnt Pallon D'or awarded on the basis of votes by journalists across Europe. Ditto for the World Cup. I don't think it was FIFA intention to award to Zizou after the infamous incident. The vote was taken by the journalists before the game finished and one must wonder not why Zizou was awarded the trophy but why on earth do you vote for the best player when the final hasnt even finished?

Anyway, it seems to me Canna and Gigi are both equally deserving if this was a lifetime achievement. But Canna has been remarkably consistent throughout this year (I dun know about Real though) whilst Gigi has been injured significant time. This is probably the tie-breaker for me. As Mark said trophy should be awarded on the basis of season. Now I don't think Gigi will ever end up winning the trophy again unless he wins Euro, WC, or Champions League - the odds are stacked up against it. Its pity that the greatest GK of all time could conceivably finish his career with no distinguishable lifetime achievement award whilst likes of Michael Owen could claim to have been once an European Player of the year. Then again neither Baresi or Maldini won anything in their career. More frustrating is that you can only asks the journalists to recognize the value of defensive players.
