Yes exactly. A national league is awarded a certain number of CL and UEFAcup berths depending on how well their clubs did in these two European competitions. This is calculated through UEFA's list of coefficients.

i have a question......the team that wins the coppa will get a uefa cup berth next season. if the winning team is already in CL or uefa cup, then the place is given to the runners-up correct?
what happens if both teams are already in the europen competitions? let's say the standings now, finishes as it is (we're 3rd and lazio 4th)......then who'll take that uefa cup berth?

Yeah, it depends from ref to ref, some like to write it in their notebooks and some on the cards... btw, shouldt refs have little hand held computers?
Though I'm not sure how they calculate that. Afterall, there are two teams in the third spot (in this case Milan and Inter). Maybe goal difference is the deciding factor. Not sure.
Well say the teams showed up and they were tired after the long journey and noone was really in the mood to play, the captain could just say "you wanna toss it?" and if the other captain accepted, they could just go home.
are you sure? coz the way i see it they dont do things like that in Serie A...
i always been wondering about this... there was once when i played cm, i deliberately lose a game at the end of the season so that i can get equal points with the 2nd and the 3rd team and to see what happen from there.... it dont turn out that way though as the 3rd team drew their game ... and for the first time i have to win the scudetto through a 2 leg playoff with the 2nd placed team..
That sounds a bit harsh, not giving credit to teams for having a strong defence. Just say team A scores 50 goals and concedes 20. Does that make them a better team than team B who score 30 goals and concede none?
