Love to help you out, but I don't keep a list (used to once). I have some scattered notes that indicate these are some titles I liked in the not so distant past. If you want the why I have it written up for these.

Taken
Robocop
The Recruit
Office Space :star:
Batman Begins
Da Vinci Code
Equilibrium
Amores perros
Citizen X
Hotel Rwanda
Haven't seen the rest but I loved the bold ones too much. See folks? It's not that bad at all :D
I think we have to work on those movies Martin hasn't liked :D

Have you seen 21 grams Martin?

In the end it's all a matter of taste. I don't see anyone arguing they have a handle on taste in music - I think people acknowledge there's myriad styles that appeal to various people and it's hard to account for what may appeal to a particular person.

But in this field there is a self professed elite that reviews and rates all movies. If you don't fit in with their general conclusions then you have no idea what you're talking about. What it really means though is that their conclusions don't apply as widely as they think they do and it's a matter of disbelief (witness Osman's reaction) that someone doesn't follow the pattern.
Rating movies is a matter of taste I agree, you can like a movie or not but acknowledging a great piece of acting has nothing to do with your taste IMO. It's just like acknowledging a football player's good performance in a football match.

Sean Penn should have won an oscar for that performance.
Yeah, but unfortunately what ruined that otherwise great movie for me was the direction by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Now don't get me wrong -- I really like a lot of his work, from Amores perros to Rudo y Cursi. But his directorial reliance on the shaky-cam to inject faux realism was more than just annoying and actually ruined the film for me.

Inspiring a cameraman with the nerves of a heroin junkie on too much coffee to go wild is not good direction. It doesn't make the movie seem more "real", just more amateurish.

I didn't really find anything wrong with it myself.

Still can't believe Benicio Del Toro went to Mercersburg Academy.

So far, I've told everyone this: "Watch Wrestler. I'm sure you'll enjoy it a lot".
Seriously? :p Watched it for like 15 minutes and I just had to turn it off. I couldn't stand the boredom. You asked Martin to see his list but now after this I'd like to see yours if it's possible. :D

Btw I watched Fight Club for the second time last night and true, I loved it even more.

I think it supposed to be a "dark comedy". There hasn't been a good one of those since Death to Smoochie.
I thought I was the only one who loved that movie.

How do you guys feel about this whole films in 3D thing?
Not too impressed. Wearing those silly glasses is just too damn annoying. Also, it reminds me too much of those 3D cinemas they have, or used to have in theme parks. :D

Yesterday I watched:

Mirrors - as expected : pretty lame & boring horror movie. Too bad, because I thought Alexandre Aja was a pretty interesting "new" director in the horror genre after "Haute Tension" (Switchblade Romance) and his Hills remake.

Night Watch (Nochnoy Dozor) - second time I watched it, which I had to do because I was going to watch the sequel and I didn't really remember a lot of it. Some impressive scenes & moments, but overall the movie is just good, definitely not great.

Day Watch (Dnevnoy Dozor) - inferior sequel. Again some impressive scenes, but overall this movie is nothing more than mediocre. There's also not as much of a story in this one, while the runtime is 140 min, so a lot of boring, unnecessary moments.
Also, at the time of Night Watch, they said it was going to be a trilogy. I don't see that happening any more. The ending of Day Watch pretty much wraps everything up.

I think that's probably futile. Pulp Fiction fans will tell you as much :D Still, I'm not opposed to changing my mind.

No, but I have seen Traffic if they are at all similar :cap:

I don't agree. Acting is still all about you being able to access the emotions through the actor. Which means it has to suit the individual viewer. Suppose there's a movie about a person who has some kind of mental illness that makes him very distant and muted. A viewer who knows the illness will say that's a great performance, the actor really understood the role. A viewer who doesn't might say he was all quiet and inaccessible. Didn't give enough of himself, couldn't carry the plot. And... they are both right.

Some movies are simple: pride, honor, duty (Gladiator). But some don't reach us because we don't have the "receptors" to receive the signals we're getting.
