Stop bitching about the quality, good movie should be appreciated even if it's VHS.

Like it was before.
But when HD is the standard and the director is a visual genius, a fucking Blu-ray should be a no-brainer. I assume there are some issues about who owns the rights to issue it though.

Says the broski who thinks Gladiator and Alien are great films. Pfft. Maybe on VHS, at a 10 year old sleepover party. :p
Alien is great.

If anyone has torrent links for Tarkovsky's Stalker in BDRIP/preferable 1080, please share!

Meh, just realized it hasn't been released in Blu Ray format yet. That sucks.
There are 4 of Tarkovsky's films that have seen Blu-Ray release so far. Solaris and Ivan's Childhood have each seen a very good release by criterion. However, his two later (and IMO better) films, The Sacrifice and Nostalghia were restored and released by Kino Lorber and they clearly don't have the budget to treat such a restoration properly. Criterion painstakingly removes all scratches, dirt, dust and other junk on the archival film, whereas Kino Lorber does not and it leaves a film image with quite a bit of that static on the screen. Small screen it's not so bad, but anything over 32"/80cm looks pretty rough. It's pretty lame that they bought the rights to these films blu-Ray releases and did such a poor job. I'd love to see Criterion do all of Tarkovsky's films.

Stalker is likely to get a Blu-Ray release in the next year or two. There's a decent DVD version on torrent sites right now, the Artificial Eye release. The best way to see any of Tarkovsky though, is in a repertoire cinema, as his films frequently show up there, and it's a pretty transcendent experience to see his films on that massive screen, especially Stalker and The Sacrifice.

Alien is a pretty good film, I wouldn't call it great, but that's just me. I'm not a Sigourney Weaver fan at all. So the fact I still think the film is a good one despite Ms. Weaver's presence says something "great" about the film itself, I suppose. I watched it a couple years ago in a retrospective at a nearby cinema, and still do like the storyline, and their are a number of brilliant scenes, but the camera work just isn't that great IMO.

Gladiator, on the other hand, is utter rubbish. Again, casting is a major issue, with Russell Crowe being one of the most overrated actors in Hollywood. I'd be hard-pressed to think of a performance of his I actually thought was decent. Aside from that, the plot is lame, and it's altogether a sloppy narrative.

Yes, and no English subtitles. -.- Good thing the release has been ripped and uploaded online.

Saw Gone Girl today. It started out as a fairly conventional whodunit, and I actually started worrying if Fincher had made an ordinary thriller. Luckily, and as expected, the film did get the much needed additional layer which made the film more than just decent. In fact it just kept getting better and better from the point the film started to focus on the psychological drama. It's not Fincher's best, but it's definitely a worthy film on Fincher's already very impressive filmography.

I have all 5 of them in my list, including Mirror. Thanks for the link but damn, 11gb is like asking for my provider to send me a letter regarding piracy :D I'll stick with the one that's 2gb.

Oh, and Andrei Rublev is on Blu-ray, you forgot that one as well.

My mind must have gone blank when I said 4...

Has Andrei Rublev been released yet on Blu-Ray by criterion? I thought it was awaiting a release. I know Criterion currently has it on DVD. There's a Russian release on Blu-Ray with English Sub-titles, but I haven't seen it yet.

I wonder if I should try to order it from Russia, or wait for Criterion to release their first Directors Cut version. I think it's 15 minutes longer or so, and is the very first version screened.

Gah, I desperately want Criterion to restore and release Stalker on Blu-ray. I read somewhere that Artificial Eye have the rights, though... It's bizarre that absolutely no news has been released about when it could potentially get onto blu-ray.

Mosfilm has actually made the short cut available for free in HD (720p) on YouTube with English subtitles.

I tried to find out if Criterion had any plans for releasing the longer cut, but apparently they aren't planning to do so in the near future. It seems like the negative they have available is in fairly bad shape. According to Wikipedia, Tarkovsky preferred the shorter version though.
