@CrimsonianKing

The girlfriend and I spent the night eating sushi, drinking wine, and watching both Solaris and 2001: A Space Odyssey. I still prefer the Tarkovsky film. But she was absolutely enamoured of Space Odyssey. First time for her seeing either one. It's always interesting watching how others react to such films.

Both are masterpieces. I hate comparing them. but if I had to, there's something deeply spiritual, and I'm an atheist, to Space Odyssey. And that makes it top everything else in the genre imo. Btw Have you ever read the Rama series?

Oh, that means one thing, she's a keeper. My girl could never get into something like that. She'd probably sleep half way through the movie :D

@Post Ironic familiar with all of those flicks?

The best Kubrickian films not made by Kubrick

10. Birth
9. Melancholia
8. The Grand Budapest Hotel
7. Eraserhead
6. Enemy
5. Interstellar
4. Beyond The Black Rainbow
3. Ex Machina
2. There will Be Blood
1. Under The Skin

The bolded ones I have meant to watch for years now, do you know them? This is from Tasteofcinema.com, what do you think of the list, anything to add?

Also without spoiling anything, what's your opinion on The Neon Demon and Only God Forgives? And on Nicolas Refn?

Only God Forgives was more of the same, only worse. As far as atmosphere, setting, music, etc... he's one of the very best... but his plot lines, dialogues, stories, concepts, since Drive have been very poor, and quite banal. They are, however, worth watching, just for the compelling and hypnotic atmosphere.

Birth is a shit film that has somehow seen revisionist reviews recently trying to make it into some sort of cult classic. Glazer made a serious mis-step there imo, after Sexy Beast. Kingsley was so brilliant in that one. Under the Skin, though not my favourite (dislike Scarlett Johansson), was a much better return to form for Glazer, of what he did so well with his debut. Much less substance than a Kubrick work though.

Have no idea why Grand Budapest Hotel is on that list. Not at all Kubrickian. Same with Interstellar.

Haven't yet watched Beyond the Black Rainbow either.

It's a good list though. Some great films and some good films. Although I see Melancholia as more of a Tarkovsky inspired film, and don't really see Lynch's Eraserhead as his most Kubrickian... Mulholland Drive or Blue Velvet would be closer to Kubrick imo.

I'd add... Anything by Gaspar Noe... especially Enter the Void. White Ribbon by Haneke. Vanishing Waves by Kristina Buozyte. Herzog's Aguirre... Embrace of the Serpent by Guerra is super Kubrickian too imo.
