The wife installed her first ubuntu application using the command line :weee:. Granted she just copy pasted stuff and followed instructions, but still :touched:

Was using Mint for some time. Switched to OpenSuse for a couple of days but I had a tough time with the wireless connection on it. Finally threw it out and got back to Ubuntu. OpenSuse was really beautiful though. Not a big KDE fan, but it looked good in OpenSuse. I tried LiveCD of Mageia but since GNOME3 is more cack than Unity, decided to get back to Ubuntu and installed it's latest version (which by the look of things, is like the previous two versions :D)

Yup :D. Even though Ubuntu has gotten a lot of slack for 'selling out' and all that, it's still your best bet on getting things working in the first go. There are a few niggles, but much less compared to other major distros (except Fedora, which I haven't tried yet).

How's the whole Unity thing working out? In 12.10 it was a pretty major facepalm that if you run it in Virtualbox it doesn't have hw accelerated 3d video so the desktop can't even start up because it depends on that completely.

I have it installed on the hard drive, so I haven't faced any issues as such. I've gotten used to Unity and I think this version (13.04) is slightly faster as well. It could also be because I'm using a newer laptop since the last time I used Ubuntu.

Doing a test run. It does start up but it's comically slow in Virtualbox. Desktop doesn't seem to have changed at all. I wouldn't use this.

I run either cinnamon or kubuntu (recently upgraded to 13.10 without any issues) on my boxes.
