It wasn't just a terrible start of the season, man. It was 4 months. That is half of the year. And yes, considering the 2nd half of the season that he had the year prior, it was expected that someone as young as him could have built upon it, but he didn't.
Despite this though, he had the full support of the club, he received significant minutes ahead of Zaza, even when the latter was proving to be more useful.
He could have easily been surpassed by Zaza, as the numbers at the time were skewing towards Simone being more effective, but Allegri still showed faith in him
And if he wants to go back home to be an option off of the bench, that is his choice. However, one has to really wonder that unless they sell Benzema, just how much more playing time he would get there instead of staying here.
And going to Arsenal, well, it's Arsenal. He can't afford a 4 month slump as a starter there

Bottom line is that it would take most likely 60M (considering opportunity cost) to keep him here. And he's not worth that. And he hasn't shown that he can play well with Dybala, who is our future.
Just thank Alvaro for what he's done, especially in the CL, and take the money back into the market. I'm sure Marotta can find another good striker.

It's been pointed out many times before that Morata was unatainable without Real inserting buy back clause. Wolfsburg offered more than us (+30m iirc) and their bid was rejected. Unless we were willing to pay significant fee (40-50m) to make it permanent, he was out of our reach that summer. Spending that much for 20 yo just a potential at that time, wouldn't have been wise and people had issues even when we payed 20m iirc.
Look at it this way, without Morata's clutch performances we wouldn't have been in the CL final last year. If someone made us this offer in the summer of 2014 I think every member would wholeheartedly accept. Tbh I hated the deal back then, I've liked Morata as a player though, but buy back clause didn't sit well with me. But looking at everything what has transpired afterwards I feel less bitter now.

He wasn't a first choice? Well it's up to him to fight for his place in the team, we shouldn't just bent over and succumb to player's wishes. Especially since he went through 4 months without scoring. Would it be logical to you to bench either Dybala or Mandzukic at that time, when both have been scoring/assisting regularly and the team was gaining momentum, just so someone's feeling dont' get hurt? Ridiculous. I love Morata, one of my favorite players in the team and I think he'll have a great career, but meritocracy is the way to deal with these things and Allegri was spot on.
Btw I don't believe the lack of playing time was the reason he left (he played as much as Mandzukic), but he's madridista and we all knew that we won't stand a chance if they call him back.
