Quoting scripture when out of context is very dangerous.
You are welcome to explain context and also how likely that "I come with a sword" will be read as "I come as a peacemaker" by vast majority of bible-readers.

Until then, words speak for themselves.

Martin set out to accomplish something in this thread and i just create confusion. I'm out of here :)

cheers!

Obviously the Earth gives life as well, but the image of the Sun is so much better. The Earth isn't in the skies and it isn't an exterior force.
exactly, the sun is something to look at. to get a good look at the earth you have to first remove yourself from it

but then all these new age people always want to get "in touch" with the earth

I see. So god told you what is good and what is bad.

And you also said earlier that god is good.

Which means that you are saying god is good by using god's own definition of "good".

Put more simply, it is god's opinion that god is good, because he controls the meaning of "good".

You see no problem with this?
Why should I have a problem when God's definition of good has enabled human beings to live better lives. This God Morality was/is beneficial to the human race, not harmful, therefore I don't see why there has to be a problem. If we lived purely upon our instincts then society would entriely collapse.

You're not getting it. And it's sad, because it's so simple. It requires no belief, no knowledge, it's pure logic.

I'm doing my best here, but apparently that's not enough.

Look, if you as a human can't tell the difference between good and bad, then you can't possibly know if god is good or bad. He can tell you that he is good, but that statement is meaningless, since you have no idea what "good" means, and all you can do is take his word for it.

So the statement "god is good" can never be a statement of knowledge. That's logically impossible.

Guys, a little help to make this even more obvious?

To humans, good defines everything that is beneficial to us. Meaning pleasure, success, knowledge ect.. This is what we think is good. Since we can logically deduce that peace, forgiveness, love is beneficial for the human race, we define God as good since he is teaching us to be these things.

Meaning we do not know whether or not murder is good or bad. To us, murder is just a means of survivingm, but since avoiding the act of murder has largely benefited the human race we consider peace to be good.

You need to make up your mind. Do we know good from bad by ourselves or do we need god to tell us? I tried to establish this already and got answers from you. Now you're denying what you said before.

    1. If we know good from bad, then we don't need god to tell us. All he's doing is telling us something we already know. But at least we can check if what he's telling us is true.
    2. If we don't know good from bad, then god may tell us what is good. But we can never know if he's lying. And therefore we can never establish that HE is good.

It is impossible to simultaneously a) not know what good is and b) know that god is good. It should be the most obvious thing ever.

There is a moral objective truth. Humans have awareness of this Moral objective truth long before Christianity, Islam, Juddaism. We have aspired to be good throughout our history. This timeless Moral recognition from our part can be seen as divine. Why? Since a Moral objective truth exists, therefore, there was a creator of this absolute truth, God.

If everything was coincidental and random, why would there be a truth that is absolute? Surely this truth must have had a purpose andcouldn't have been set by laws of nature.

To answer your question, Religion does not teach us what we know. It enforces this knowledge into action. Meaning I may know that killing is bad yet I will do it anyway since it has no cnsequences. Religion tells us that for our immoral actions there will be severe consequences, therefore, we act morally because of our fear.

In that case it's impossible to know that "god is good". And you cannot claim to know this, because that is a logical contradiction.

So "god is good" is something we can never know. Glad to have that out of the way.

Therefore, from now on when someone asks "is god good?" you have to say "I don't know. He decides what is good, not I."
