The best we can do is to make a smart offer to Metzelder. Whether we get him or not I don't think it will be a big deal. He is a good defender, but a bit aggressive for my taste. He is a FREE transfer though, and that does really make him sound pretty good.

Aggression is hardly recommended in such a position. I do prefer to place, in case of 4-4-2, two centre defenders, one is aggressive, with high body balance and tall as well, while his partner should be a defence leader and more sane. This is the best combination for the two centre defenders. For example, Cannavaro and Metzelder would be perfect for such a combination, in my opinion.

Borussia Dortmund defender Christoph Metzelder is close to signing a contract with Real Madrid, according to reports in Germany. Bild said that the 26-year-old Germany international has already undergone a medical at the Liga club ahead of signing a four-year free transfer.

Dortmund withdrew their offer of a contract extension on Monday, although there was also reported interest from Italy, through Internazionale and Juventus.

Metzelder already has two World Cup tournaments behind him but his career has been interrupted by injuries in recent seasons. He earned rave reviews for his performances alongside Per Mertesacker in the 2006 World Cup as the hosts reached the semi-finals.
