2. Clint Eastwwood
3. Robert De Niro
4. Al Pacino?
5. Dustin Hoffman??/Jack Nicholson??/James Woods??

All these lists I see in here, mine included, are more based on the great films and roles they played instead of their actual acting performances.

Here goes my Jack Nicholson rant,so bear with me.

I didnt want to bring Awards into this,as more awards does not necessarily mean a better performer,but..someone who's been nominated for 12 Oscars(highest by any actor),won 3 Oscars(highest for a male actor),been nominted for the best actor in all 3 decades since the 70's is surely someone who can make a claim as the greatest actor ever.Im not saying this is a fact, its obviously an opinion only, but if someone says that Nicholson is the best actor ever, then i wont disagree with him,the same way i wont disagree with anyone if they said that De Niro or Morlon Brando are the greatest ever.

I think it was Bozi who said that he will always act like his own self.I disagree compltley.Every actor has a signature style.Brando,Pacino,De Niro..everyone.And so does Jack Nicholson. But he's been versatile.Ill break this down to the movies he's best known for :

As good as it gets - A light hearted oscar winning role in a romantic comedy.
Chinatown - A smartass investigator in a mystery. Not his signature neurotic style.
Batman - Arguably the best known Batman villain to date. Here, yes, you do get his signature style.
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - The movie that effectivley gave the world his signature style.
The Shining - a show stopping performance in a horror movie.
A Few Good Men - A bad ass marine officer.
Easy Rider - His signature style.Though here he plays it as a lawyer.
The Departed - Vintage Nicholson,in an action movie.

So i ask you, someone who's aced comedy, horror, action and mystery..can he NOT be called the greatest actor ever? How many other actors have given brilliant performances in a variety of genres? You can have De Niro up there, you can have Brando up there, but saying that Nicholson cannot be called the finest ever is a notion that i will never ever agree with.He deserves that title as much as anyone else.

so...what he is the most popular actor of all time, does not make him the greatest

just my 2 cents, i get what you mean salman i really do its just in my opinion he has always literally played jack in every film.

I dont think he's the most famous actor ever,i think Pacino and De Niro are much more famous and influential than him..and yes,I know what you mean man...but I'll have a very hard time moving away from my pro-Nicholson stance:flag:

Would your list remain the same in lets say...30 years from now?I could be blatantly biased here, but i think Bale and Di Caprio might be a part of my list in the year 2038.

    1. Al Pachino

    2. Sean Pean
    3. Christopher Walken
    4. Daniel Day Lewis
    5. William H. Macy

Honorable mention: Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson, Robert De Niro, Johnny Deep...

There's many many more excellent actors , but this bunch more or less completes my list.

no i have already said that guys like di caprio, norton, depp, crowe have all made some excelelnt films and had some excelelnt roles. norton for me is tremendous and right now christain bale is outstanding, so as they progress their careers i ahve no doubt they will some into contention.

i am lucky taht from a young age i was spending a lot of time with family i wathced zulu when i was 6, the godfather when i was about 8, lawrence of arabia, the ladykillers, etc so i was able to view some great movies and great performances. taht is probably why some of the older egneration are on my list, its just that i have had the pleasure to see some of their greatest films. as time goes by i am sure some of teh current crop of great actors will surpass these films and performances to become true legends, like daniel day lewis is becomming

Am I the only one lost on the "that you've SEEN" part of "Top 5 actors that you've SEEN"? I mean, would we otherwise be including actors from radio dramas of the 1930s or people who do voice-overs for Pixar movies? :confused2

I mean, isn't the point of actors is that they are seen?

I know what you're getting at.But had i said 'Top 5 actors' only, people might have included actors on sheer reputation.Someone like Humphery Boggart or Marlon Brando would have been included even if they hadnt seen their movies.
