I mentionned above :D Wasnt a spoiler for me (was impressed by the scope), if the themes alone are the only thing mentionned, which it was (for me, and Doouchan here).

And I dont want to spoil, but you asked if every season is about a different part town, no it isnt, basically every season has a theme of focusing on a different part of society (how he does it is very interesting in chancing focus, for example a character who had a very small role in earlier seasons, can suddenly be a main focus). With the drugs and the police still being quite part of it, underscoring or following it all the time.

But the themes for the seasons are (heard them before even watching, and wasnt a spoiler for me, you can be the judge for yourself). 1) Police/drugs (around in all seasons though), 2) The Docks, 3) Politics, 4) Schools, 5) Newspapers/Journalism.
This is it. One of the main themes in the show is how screwed up so many modern institutions are: good people have their ideals and careers crushed by internal politics, or are ultimately corrupted by the compromises they have to make to get ahead, whatever their original motivations.

The series really is too real and depressive btw. Maybe its just me. Bit it hit me hard it parts just by showing society as it is or can be, instead of the typical sappy moments that strings on your emotion, it was simply depicting how people are too selfish and easily corrupted to make society function as best as they can.

As said, quite a downer (also a never ending cycle). Prolly why the series was a cult a hugely ciritical success, but pretty much ignored by the general tv watching populace. Too real to be entertainment. Its like the kind of material you read in a very indepth and extremelly fine novel. Not a tv series.

I'd have to add that the 'conclusion' of events makes the 'Newspaper/Media' angle less thoroughly examined than the others.
It was the final touch to it all, and was in a season that was rapping up the whole show, its expected to.

And its funny, but of the fucked up/shady people there was in The Wire, that dishonest weasel in season 5 (you know who...) was the one who bothered me the most. Examplified the most of what Mikhail says above, of the corruption and the human nature of "getting ahead" in any way possible. Disgusted by him, even if not a big or vital character.

Who here is satisfied how our favourite homo ended up? It sucked while I was watching it, but when it all finished up, I was kinda glad because now I can't hope for spin-off following Omar or something. :D I like shows that have an end and don't go for too long, only to get lost in their own plot(ie Lost, Heroes, Prison Break and other commercial crap). It's also think it's cool that Michael carried the torch, he was a pretty good character, I wish they worked on him a little more and less on Naymond.

Also felt it would have been better had Marlo been shot down by those two punks in the street at the end. I appreciate the irony in which he ended up how Stringer always wanted to, but feel it would have suited him more to die from the game, on the street, right then and there.

When I saw that they killed of Omar I was shocked and saddened. By far the best character on any show I've ever seen. Yes, even better than Charlie from 'It's Always Sunny'.

I don't like the fact that his killer was a little boy.
I actually like that fact. Basically if it wasn't a 7 year old kid, Omar would have seen it coming. He felt something was wrong, turned around and saw a kid...he has the code and can't really shoot a kid like it was nothing. The way I see it, this death goes to his credit if nothing else.

But logically it makes sense since that was the only way the writers could kill him off. Unless he was in some freak accident or something of the sort. Having Omar killed off by another thug or character would seemingly shatter the greatness of of who/what Omar was.

I think the purpose of him ending the show like that adds to the reality of the whole series. Sort of like the good guy never always wins, unlike the case with Avon. Also lets the viewer explore what possibly could happen to him in his 'new life'.

I never thought about it that way with a kid being the least of Omar's worries in a sense, just about how the boy would be able to properly use the gun across a shop. Probably easy, never tried shooting one before.

I'm definitely in the bracket of thinking he's the best character in the show. Absolutely adored his jump from the 5/6th story building.

Understatement to say best on the show, he is one of the best characters ever for me. And yeah his death was kinda ironic.

Again, one of the guys he's based on survived a similar situation. The strangest thing about Omar is how much of the unrealistic stuff is actually true.
