    Phase One Group G - 24/9/02
    Deportivo 0 - 4 Milan
    Seedorf 17 (M), Inzaghi 33, 55, 62 (M)

    Riazor Stadium

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milan were the only Italian team ever to have beaten Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor, but tonight inflicted a humiliating thrashing to the Spaniards and made themselves favourites to top this tough Group.
The Rossoneri had already won 1-0 here two seasons ago, but now set a new record for Deportivo's worst ever European home defeat.

Deportivo La Coruna also had three points in the table following a shock 3-2 win at Bayern Munich, but lost their top star Juan Valeron for two months with a fractured leg.

Rivaldo was back in familiar territory as the Brazilian wore the blue and white shirt before making his big-time move to Barcelona.

Deportivo piled on the pressure early on with Fran Gonzalez on particularly fine form, but the Rossoneri defence held out well against the waves of attacks down the wings.

However, it was Milan who seemed truly dangerous when coming forward and took the lead on 17 minutes with a splendid move. Rivaldo dummied Manuel Rui Costa's through ball and allowed Clarence Seedorf to drill a powerful drive into the bottom right-hand corner.

Carlo Ancelotti's superstar squad continued to impress and could have grabbed a second soon after. Rivaldo placed the ball in for Gennaro Gattuso on the edge of the box, but the unmarked midfielder ballooned a great scoring opportunity over the bar.

The second goal eventually arrived on the half-hour mark when Filippo Inzaghi met a Rui Costa centre and although his first attempt was parried, the second slipped into the empty net. Inzaghi has now scored in all of Milan's games this season.

Deportivo began to increase the pressure in the first half stoppage time and Dida required a desperate double save and scrambled clearance on several Roy Makaay efforts.

At the dawn of the second period there was a lack of concentration from Dida as the Milan shotstopper picked up the ball just inside the box after he had already let go to clear. Fortunately for the Brazilian the indirect free kick was parried by the defensive wall.

Soon after there was more tension when Dida flew to make a one-handed save on Naybet's close-range header, while Alessandro Nesta made an acrobatic follow-up.

Deportivo were pushing so hard that they left gaping holes for the counter-attack, and it was at this point that Milan pounced for their third and fourth. Rui Costa threaded the ball through for an umarked Inzaghi before again springing the offside trap to complete his hat-trick.

Superpippo takes his total European career tally to 40 goals and overtakes Alessandro Altobelli to become the top Italian scorer in continental competition history.

Inzaghi could have had a fourth on 75 minutes when his volley clattered off the crossbar, soon after firing wide from close range.

Perhaps the only disappointing element of this team was Rivaldo, who in the final minute blasted a clear opportunity over the bar. Jon Dahl Tomasson also sent his free header over in stoppage time.
