Something seriously needs to be done. Teams who both have incentive and responsibility of keeping up with players health are not doing so, and we really need ways to ensure player's saftey.

I think this health problem will be more acute with mediocre players and small teams. Having players go through full check will be very expensive for these clubs compared to rich ones. I bet all the biggest teams in Europe will have intensive look at their players health because they are multi million asset from the perspective of team owners, but for small clubs, players arent that valuable anyway, and they dont have the means either.

FIFA can say all the condolences as much as they want, but unless they stop treating these cases not as bad lucks and responsibility of players, I am not going let them off the hook. As I said before, pooling players wages, and having compulsory check-up via player association, is the best way forward IMO. Its like having second opinion from doctor. And good way to ensure all players' safety by susidizing poor players by taxing more wealthier players. I mean how many normal people will visit their local doctor to check if they have any genetic, heart, cancer, or brain disease? These are so rare, most will simply not bother to do thorough checks and players are no exception. We need action.

Look, there are millions of football players. You can't check them all. Especially not for heart issues, you just don't expect anything to occur with young people. I mean, the only symptom Puerta complained about was that he was feeling a tad light in the head at times.

Hell, both of my parents are doctors and do you think I've ever had an examination of my heart? The only reason there's an occasional death in football is because there are so many players out there. Clubs are not at fault. I don't believe for a second Sevilla have any responsibility whatsoever.

y not? you should examine your heart too Seven, and it is not hard to check those Million players' heart, the club should do that, or the players.. it's not that it will cost them a fortune, even if it does that fortune is not more expensive than their health!

It would cost them a fortune in the end. Because at that rate not only the heart needs to be examined, but a full body check is necessary. And clubs like Sevilla already do a lot of medical exams on a player. You quite simply cannot test every football player out there on every freak medical condition. Besides, there are also things that happen over time, so if you want to go through with this, perhaps a weekly exam would be necessary..

At some point we need to accept people die. That's just the way it is. Puerta's death is nobody's fault. It's a tragedy, no doubt, but accusations towards Sevilla, the FIFA and the world of football in general are out of order.

As a sidenote: Puerta's heart actually was examined, yet there were no signs of a possibly lethal heart condition and he got the clear ...

I think it is strange to see an atlete of 22 years old suddenly collapse and die.
he must have been checked a million times and has all the care a proffesional football player can have. It can of course be a freak incident but I wonder if he took any illegal substances? Doping or drugs? I know this is tragic but these days you can't help but think of these things.

I am no expert in this, you probably know better than me (since your parents are doctors). But something must be done, they just can't leave this to their "destiny". really don't know what to say, since you say Puerta did the exams before. Very weird situation..
