If you're captain of your team you gotta lead by example, especially during the most challenging times, not get sent of for a headbutt you made to settle some personal grievance with a bloke like Materazzi.

If it hadn't been for that (call it choking, losing your cool, whatever), France could've still gone out on pens and Zidane would've still been my choice for player of the tournament. But seeing as things went the way they did, Canna was the real capitano.

Not my argument at all, Dusan ;). I say there is no such thing. I say you're a Juventus fan if you say you're a Juventu fan.

Fred,

it's not like that in Italy. In Italy they do represent the cities they are located in. Very much so actually
.
Not really. If that were true, then foreign players would not play for them. Athletic Bilbao, now that is a club that represents the city/province its located in.

Cannavaro was. Zidane was the best player I have ever seen and he was great at the world cup, but Cannavaro's performances were the best I've seen of any player on any world cup.

I strongly disagree, Zidane was absolutely stunning in that World Cup. The game against Brazil especially, Seven has a point when he said that it was one of the best individual performances a player has ever had in the WC, that was an insane match he played there. The final and the game against Spain he was amazing too. Zidane was hands down the best player in that tournament, Cannavaro was a close second though. Pirlo was great too.

No. Athletic Bilbao is just xenophobic. Italian cities have been buying artists to represent them since the Middle Ages. Read a little, learn a little, my friend.

I don't care if they've been bringing artists, fact is, there are teams like Inter who do not have one single player from Milan, how do they represent Milan?

Inter don't represent Milan.

They're Internazionale.

You might want to look into that.

Zidane was horrendous in the group stage games. Considering that and his stupid red card in the final (which brought France down psychologically and most probably did cost them the trophy), he can't be reckoned as the best player of the World Cup IMO.

Do Juve represent Torino?

How many players do they have that originate from Torino?
Why do you think all these teams want players from their youth academies?

Why do you think Marchisio is an instant hit with the fans?

Zidane did rather well against Switzerland, he wasn't bad. He was however mediocre against S.Korea.

Teams always want players from their youth academies, these players do not necessarily have to be from the city of location however.

As for the second question, of course fans love home grown players more than others. Like Raul in Real Madrid, Gerrard in Liverpool etc. That doesn't mean the club represents the city though, because if it did, they wouldn't have so many foreign players.

Ow. Right. They just have huge preferences for players who happen to be from the city the team is located in.

Not because that team has any connection to the city whatsoever.

How exactly do you think a football team comes to exist?

Cannavaro on the other hand was excellent in the whole tournament and he won the World Cup in the end. That's why he was the best player of the World Cup.

I said they do not represent the city. and they don't. How can you represent a city, and only have 5-10% of your squad from that city. Are you saying all these Brazilians, Argentines, French, Danes, Swedish represent Torino? That doesn't make a lot of sense, does it?

He was not as excellent as Zidane, which is why he wasn't the best in the World Cup.

Who on Paper was the best team in that competition? I think it was Brazil. Now I think alot of Italy fans need to rewatch that game carefully and watch Zidanes performance.

That game was one of Zidanes best, absolutely stunning performance. It was games like those that make me wonder how people could compare Messi to Zidane.
