Zidane makes people starry eyed, even when he doesn't play well he looks nice and that makes an impression more than doing the important things mere mortals do in defence. I'll tell you who was also very good for France in this tournament - Lilian Thuram, I didn't think he was a million miles behind Cannavaro. Juve had some killer defensive players back then.

I'm not sure. I don't remember the actual games, but I remember thinking about how disappointing he was. I think the Brazil game was his first good one.
But he was the best in the World Cup and that's why he won the Ballon D'or that year :eyebrows:

If he was the best in the World Cup, he would have won best player of the WC, no? Zidane won that.

Cannavaro did not deserve the ballon d'or, but he won it because of his great performances in the WC coupled with his consistent performances with Juve that season.

He was not as excellent as Zidane, which is why he wasn't the best in the World Cup.
He was. That was a defensive masterpiece. Zidane was God and most of the fans prefer an attacking masterpiece than defensive art, but that takes nothing away from the way Canna played imo.
I'd still give the MVP to Canna. Even if France won the WC on penalties, I'd have given it to Cannavaro.

I have to say I disagree with FIFA's judgement. I was in awe of Cannavaro's performances, disappointed in Zidane's.

Cannavaro was great, one of the best defensive performances i've seen in a while in that WC, but he was unlucky to have played that well in a WC where Zizou excelled. Those games against Brazil, Spain and Italy were pure art. Very few players in the history of football could give such dominant performances.

Who on Paper was the best team in that competition? I think it was Brazil. Now I think alot of Italy fans need to rewatch that game carefully and watch Zidanes performance.
He was great in that game, although Brasil's defence was very poor, from memory.

BTW did anybody hear the rumour about how Brasil were paid €20m by the French to throw that game? No seriously, it only made a few English language columns but in China it was well 'known' and big news. I think the Roberto Carlos "hands in pockets" defending was the root of it.

I'm sure his World Cup winners medal and Ballon D'Or trophy consoled him somewhat from his loss in the internet reputation stakes :D
