5/10.

- After all that happened to us in the last couple of years, we do not seem like we have learned from our own mistakes. We seem to rely on unexperienced, cheap coaches, hoping they would turn out good. Getting Conte was the worst move in this mercato.

- Melo's loan departure was useless. He could have formed a remarkable trio along Pirlo and Vidal in midfield.

- Signing Pepe and Motta permanently after last season's horror show is fascinating.

- Failure on getting a quality CB will come to bite us in the ass very soon.

- Again, we have not improved our LB position, but decided to get another one of the same level as De Ceglie.

- Bought too much average players unnecessarily when we were promised we'll focus on quality this Summer.

- We should have bought a better player than Elia for our LW position.

+ Getting Lichtsteiner for our RB position was a very smart move.

+ Getting Vidal for a decent price after he was named one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga last season.

+ Getting Pirlo will truly help our team create opportunities we clearly lacked before, and for free.

+ Terminating Grygera's contract.

It doesn't look that bad, but those last three point to a rather big failing in our strategy. Three strikers all of whom were bigger impact players than Matri, Quag and Vuci in their prime and now we have relegated them to the scrap heap because we can't get rid of them.

As I said, I like the signings of Vidal and Licht cuz they are fine players and good upgrades to what we had and could easily play for top teams around Europe. The resr though were bunch of disappointments and players that wasn't enough of an upgrade. Also for the money we spent you always expect much more then what we actually got.

Up until a few days ago this Mercato was getting a 8/10 from me because I thought the following was defenitly gonna happen.

Alves and Rhodolfo in Bonucci out.
Grygera sold for 3m instead I hear we just terminated his contact.
Pepe to zenit for 9m.
Amauri gone and Martinez loaned which did happen though we're still paying his whole wage.
Grosso contract terminated.

If these scenarios had of played out Then I would of tipped my hat to Marotta even though no top player arrived and we kind of signed a few average players but at least he got rid of the dead wood.

Instead this didn't happen and now we have a huge, expensive, average squad with alot of unsettled players and a questionable coach.

6/10 for me with this being a make or break season forwhether or not to keep Marotta in a job.

On the bright side if we can get to January and still be in the hunt for 3rd place then we should bring in a top defender regardless of how Bonucci is doing and off load Amauri, Iaquinta, Pepe and plug any other holes we have in our team then maybe just maybe we can snatch that 3rd spot.

Then get knocked out to Arsenal/Liverpool in the qualifiers next year :D

well i would not call it the best mercato in italy..... but even though i only give it a 4.5-5 it was one of the best.
milan with taiwo mexes nocerino and aquiliani had not a good mercato but they def. had other needs than we had... so they did not spend much and got what they needed.... roma is a big question mark for me.... inter sold eto'o but got forlan zarate alvarez. overall i think they are weaker now. than we have napoli who did much for the depth i think and add some quality (inler)
so i guess it is still milan>inter>napoli> juve/lazio/roma>>> udinese/parlermo/fiorentina

I still rate it as the best mercato in Italy.
I agree on that. The sad part is, that even if we improved the most, we are still behind Milan and Inter, just because they had so much better squad before the window opened, and we had so many holes to fill in our team. But now I think the distance between us and them is shorter than last season, that should count..

Inter losing Eto'o has weakened them alot. He won games on his own last year. However you're right we're still behind them.

Nothing but bitching in the Marotta thread (and all the others as well :D), yet barely anyone has rated this mercato as a failure. Doesn't really add up if you ask me.

Its a failure, I honestly don't see how this mercato any better than last season's mercato. With the exception of lich who was an upgrade (don't rate that much too) over what we have but thats all.

Its a failure because after spending 80m on transfers we still havn't closed the gap on the Milan clubs by a big margin and still have alot of holes in the team.

We have improved are starting 11 though.

I'm going to give this mercato a 4 out of 10, because Marotta made a lot of the exact same mistakes for the second year in a row.

Hired (what at this point seems like) a tactically inflexible coach who has not proven himself at this level.

Didn't properly address the defense. Not even close. I have no idea how he rationalized bringing in, what, 11-12 players for the second year in a row, and only 2 of them were defenders - one of whom was free, and is not even in the coaches plans. This just really makes me angry. It's just so damn stupid.

Didn't prioritize the LM slot, and left it until the last minute; Elia could come good, he has a great deal of natural ability, the price was pretty good, but he's not an accomplished player. He's one big question mark, when we really needed a proven addition.

Brought in a ridiculous number of new faces. A lot of players won't know exactly where they fit in to this club. What makes it even worse is that we're only in one fucking competition; there is really no excuse in going for quantity over quality when you're in one competition and you spend 88M on transfers, or whatever it was (minus 14Mish in sales/co-ownerships? something like that). There can be NO excuses for bringing in 23 players in 460 odd days.

He once again let useful pieces go for a pittance. I was a big Melo fan, I still think he was probably our most consistent player last year, I'm really at a loss in trying to understand how this relationship deteriorated so quickly. I can't believe a loan/option to Gala was the best he could come up with. I thought Pasquato should have been a squad player. I'm not in favor of getting rid of players after one year, and I think in a 4-3-3 Jorge could have provided some depth and we could have focused some of our resources elsewhere; unfortunately, Martinez really has no business playing wide on either side of midfield - even if that was the position Marotta bought him for.

I like Vidal, Licht, Pirlo, and even the Vucinic move. I think Matri will do well for us, he certainly put up some solid numbers last year, but he was pretty expensive. I made up that silly Qtube nickname tongue in cheek, because I thought he was all flash and no substance; he proved me wrong last year, and I really hope he can bounce back from his injury. After the big front end of that loan, I can see how 10.5M makes some sense, and I am fond of the player now, but I personally would have let him walk after the injury. That said, I'd much rather rely on Q than Amauri, Iaquinta, or Toni... but that doesn't mean much, considering those players. Anyway, hopefully he rebounds in a big way.

Buying Pepe and Motta after last year's performance is a disgrace; silly obligation and/or we're squarely under Udinese's thumb. Pazienza has no business at this club, free or not. His position should have gone to a youngster. Ziegler never represented a significant upgrade, there was no reason to sign him.

I don't understand the Giacherrini move very well; I haven't seen much of the player, he could be useful, but given his probable role and some of his characteristics, I'm disappointed that we didn't spend some time trying to woo our other little fellow back to the club.

Estigarribia will cost us 500K; I haven't seen the player enough to rate him at all, the price makes it low risk, I guess it could turn out well.

I'm not going to get into the dead wood issue. It's not an easy situation, but surely Marotta should have done a little better than he did.

As for a prediction on where we'll finish, anywhere from 3rd to 5th place seems possible. So I'll split the difference and say 4th, but with a bit of luck - and maybe a quality addition or two at the back in the winter - we might just be able to snag that last CL spot.

I say 8. We've improved, considering how hard it must have been to attract quality players without the CL factor.

I say that I won't vote based on the fact that they have yet to play a competitive match. See me in mid season, and then I'll grade.

People thought the Storari transfer last year was stupid, and how did that turn out?

Conversely, a lot of people, myself included, thought the Aquilani deal had the potential to be a masterstroke, and it didn't quite turn out that way.

Like I said, see me in mid-season.
