Deschamps happy with Boum Tuesday 22 August, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus boss Didier Deschamps says he's delighted with the imminent arrival of French defender Jean-Alain Boumsong.

The Newcastle stopper is expected to complete his transfer to the Turin giants this evening as the club’s search for a new centre-back has come to an end.

“Alain is a real defender,” stated the new Bianconeri boss today. “He has great athletic qualities and is experienced seeing as he is an international, although he did struggle last season.

“Other arrivals? We’ll see, but he will do us for now.”

The 26-year-old, who will have to replace Lilian Thuram and Fabio Cannavaro, will probably cost around £2.5m.

Boum close to Juve switch

Jean Alain Boumsong has spent a second night in Turin increasing the Newcastle United central defender's chances of joining Juventus.

But United were still waiting anxiously to hear from Italy today whether the French international was going to switch to the disgraced Serie B outfit after saying they have agreed a 6m deal for Boumsong

Not only could United do with the transfer fee, they will also want to get rid of the £35,000-a-week wages of a player who does not figure in their plans.

Deschamps confirmed he is looking to sign Newcastle’s French central defender, Jean-Alain Boumsong: “The contract has not been signed yet but we are working on things. He’s a true, pure-bred defender with great physical qualities. He has good experience, having played for the French national side, and offers the security we are looking for in defence. He will give us something extra at the back”.

Ive watched him play at both Rangers and Newcastle and he was awfull. When he played for Rangers he was a laughing stock in Scotland
what are you talking about!? :disagree:

he was by far the best defender in the SPL when he played for Rangers, fair enough the opposition isnt the greatest but he was excellent for Rangers. You didnt hear anybody saying that the £8m Newcastle paid at the time was over the top, so he clearly was playing well.

You must remember that Newcastle is like Inter, good players turn rubbish there and become glorious underachievers. He also was a big prospect at Auxerre thought to be as promising as Mexes.

Im not happy with this transfer either, but maybe signing a young french international defender for a cut price is not the worst move in the world! who knows he could be suited to the slower pace of Italian football. We turned Cannavaro around why not Boumsong too!
