To be fair to Lincoln, you can't really know what he thought. I know it's what he said, but those were different times. Even if his initial plan was to abolish slavery (which I doubt it was, I'll give you that), he could hardly come out and say it.

Have you guys been following the debate about taking down the confederate flag after the SC Shooting? The people defending the flag claim it has nothing to do with racism, rather, its supporting the people that fought to defend it. Maybe I'm missing something in my history lessons here but wasn't the flag flown during the times when slavery was prominent and those who fought to defend it were in fact trying to keep slavery alive? So, that leads me to my next question: How then isn't this about racsim if the flag was flown by those trying to keep it alive?

the confederacy wanted to secede from the union because the federal govt was unconstitutionally infringing on state rights, lincoln had no problems letting southern states continue haivng slaves if it meant theyd accept said infringement.
