@swag @Enron ,

Have you guys been following the debate about taking down the confederate flag after the SC Shooting? The people defending the flag claim it has nothing to do with racism, rather, its supporting the people that fought to defend it. Maybe I'm missing something in my history lessons here but wasn't the flag flown during the times when slavery was prominent and those who fought to defend it were in fact trying to keep slavery alive? So, that leads me to my next question: How then isn't this about racsim if the flag was flown by those trying to keep it alive?

And then I found this gem :lol:

Part of the civil war was the south fighting back against what they thought would cripple their local economies, right? Not just slavery. But slavery was part of keeping that economy surviving. (Cotton/Tobacco)

The confederacy wanted secession from the rest of the Union and I thought a big reason was because of what I mentioned.

Good analogy. I'm not American so my knowledge of American history has come from self-education after school. My understanding is that it was based around economics and specifically around the issue of the gold or silver standard.

It's been a while since my interest though and my memory is a little foggy. Could any US posters correct me?

the confederacy wanted to secede from the union because the federal govt was unconstitutionally infringing on state rights, lincoln had no problems letting southern states continue haivng slaves if it meant theyd accept said infringement.

Like I said to X, a big part of the issue was how it would effect the economies of the states in the "South" if slavery ended. X also brought the point that it was allowed then suddenly the national government was trying to make it illegal which is why the "South" claimed the feds were infringing on their rights. For such a long time Slavery had been a massive part of their economy from Cotton to Tobacco production. Here the government was trying to pull the rug right from under their feet.

guess who said this in his inaugural speech:

"I have no purpose directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so...."
