I haven't seen it, no, but I read that it was disappointing since it was a film that's difficult understand for the sake of being difficult, and that it would be borderline impossible to understand if you hadn't read the novel. So I've kind of avoided it, but I guess that's a mistake. :D
I don't know that I'd say impossible. The first 20-30 minutes are certainly quite esoteric, but after that the film becomes a little more coherent and comprehensible, and in a 170 minute film, that 20-30 minutes becomes a little more acceptable. From what I gather, the film was received with near-universal acclaim from critics (Metacritic at 87 with the lowest critic rating being a 70), but the IMDB score of 6.5 suggests the general viewing public has a less favourable review. I haven't seen a single poor review from a critic, most of them heap praise upon it. I wonder if part of that low score and that specific criticism is to do with that 20-30 minutes rather than the film as a whole.

It's not an overly faithful adaptation of the novel. I'd suggest it's better than the novel, though this has been the case with all three of the major films I've seen adapting Strugatsky Brother works. A large part of that would be the filmmakers doing the adaptations, Tarkovsky, Sokurov, and now Aleksei German. There's something about the Strugatsky brothers' work that seems to suit the film medium better, perhaps the deliberate incoherency that films like this one and Tarkovsky's Stalker revel in, that somewhat esoteric aspect, the anachronistic settings and story-lines, the grotesque and phantasmagorical landscapes, although with Tarkovsky this is much more subtle and expressed with a beautiful minimalism, in Aleksei German it's bold, overt, and at times repulsively in your face.

It seems like an exploration of inhumanity, like a touching upon something alien to us, that will never be understood, even though we've experienced it, a treatise on our unwillingness to create a dialogue with the Hell we often experience on Earth, our unwillingness to understand it, to learn from it, to escape it (in the director's case this seems to refer to Stalinism). It's a demanding film, but somewhat ironically, considering the filth, decay, and grotesqueness of it, it's a savagely beautiful film that I highly recommend. Just have the patience to sit through the opening scenes and I don't think you'll regret it.

Haven't seen it yet but will check it out, looks interesting :tup:
Has anyone got a link for the movie? Can't seem to find one...
It isn't :(

Come on, you hipster. Find us something. I want to watch this $#@!.
Sorry guys. I hadn't realized it wouldn't be out on torrent sites yet. Seeing as its a 2013 film, I thought it would have seen release. Apparently both dvd and blu-ray are being released in the next 1-2 months. I just saw that they're available for pre-order on Amazon now. So it should turn up soon.

Artificial Eye to Release Andrei Tarkovsky Films on Blu-ray in 2015

@Kieselguhr Kid
Fuck. Are they really releasing all of them on Blu-Ray next year? That's amazing. The Kino Lorber blu-ray releases of The Sacrifice and Nostalghia are pretty mediocre. Criterion would be ideal for the entire Tarkovsky catalogue because of the painstaking work they do to clean and restore entire film prints, but Artificial Eye is much better than Kino.

This is very very exciting. :tuttosport:

Apparently Artificial Eye announced in November that they are releasing every Tarkovsky film on Blu-ray in 2015. I completely missed it. Stalker in HD. :tuttosport:
And I thought I was slow. :p

Stalker is even getting a Japanese Blu-ray release on June 10th so in less than two months there should be a HD torrent out.

That trailer is good , but after seeing the new star wars and BVS trailer it kind of failed to ignite a great hype in me . Still looks solid , althrough i must say i wouldn't mind the idea of this movie failing just so marvel has a chance to get FF4 rights back :D . While i wouldn't care much about ff4 in the avengers i would love to see dr doom as a villain in the MU .
