what's large? 3gb or 700mb? if it's the latter i moved divx movies and the likes from windows onto the ext3 partition, no problems whatsoever.

@ graham; first install windblows than install ubuntu. other way around is possible but includes restoring the grub, which is a pain in the ass i heard.
I was just saying.. captiventfs for instance does write ntfs.. at like 300kb/s apparently. Of course that's for an fs that noone understands, whereas ext3 is a standard you can look up in no time.

That was the plan, but:

I booted up using the Windows CD, and when it came time to create my partitions, my notebook literally switched itself off without any explanation. I tried that once more and it did the same thing, and then I thought "bugger this, I'll install Ubuntu first".

Installation was an absolute breeze, and I'm almost expecting my system to make me reboot at least 3 more times before it's ready to use.

So at this point I'm using my fresh new Ubuntu installation, and Windows XP has yet to be installed... which makes me wonder... should I even bother? I think I'll see how long before I find myself needing to install Windows.
I tried installing Windows again, and that led to a mini-crisis, so I'm holding off until I really really need to install Windows...

Wait, did you try installing windows first, and then installing Ubuntu? cuz that's what worked for me..s

It'll help if you partition it off before you do any of this first with partition magic or summat as well..

Yep, that was the plan, but for some unknown reason my computer decides to switch itself off without any explanation when I try to install Windows, so I just decided to bugger it and install Ubuntu first... and I haven't really felt the need to install Windows anyway...

Cool; I'll have a look when I get home. First impressions of major changes?

Release notes say most stable release ever, tons of bugfixes. And a new feature - integration with magnatune.com music store, I tried it today, very cool. You can listen to streaming music from the store without restriction. There's an option to buy if you want to.

Shouldn't that be the case with any update of software? :agree:

Sounds pretty good, but that "stream with restriction, with the option to buy" thing is just inviting people to get all the songs they want for free if they wish, using any recording software.

Reminds me a little bit of how the demo version of Quake 1 contained the full version, with restrictions on the levels and the option to unlock them by paying. Needless to say it was cracked in no time.

Not at all, there are bugfix releases and there are feature releases. Ubuntu Edgy is the latter, touted as being the forward looking version with a lot of new stuff, bound to be somewhat unstable. Then there are times when they do a complete feature freeze and only work on fixing bugs. Not all releases are created equal.

That was always possible anyway. You can stream the music right off their websites and record it if you choose to, amarok just made it a lot easier to browse the entire collection and drag/drop onto your playlist etc.

Here's a howto on installing a virus on linux. And Jack knows this ain't no joke either.

    ===

    evilmalware 0.6 (beta)

    Copyright 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005
    E\/17 |-|4><0|2z Software Foundation, Inc.

This is free software; see the source for copying conditions. There is
NO warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY, COMPLETE DESTRUCTION OF IMPORTANT
DATA or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE (eg. sending thousands of Viagra
spams to people accross the world).

    Basic Installation
    ==================

Before attempting to compile this virus make sure you have the correct
version of glibc installed, and that your firewall rules are set to `allow
    everything'.

    1. Put the attachment into the appropriate directory eg. /usr/src

    2. Type `tar xvzf evilmalware.tar.gz' to extract the source files for
    this virus.

    3. `cd' to the directory containing the virus's source code and type
`./configure' to configure the virus for your system. If you're
using `csh' on an old version of System V, you might need to type
`sh ./configure' instead to prevent `csh' from trying to execute
    `configure' itself.

    4. Type `make' to compile the package. You may need to be logged in as
    root to do this.

    5. Optionally, type `make check_payable' to run any self-tests that come
with the virus, and send a large donation to an unnumbered Swiss bank
    account.

    6. Type `make install' to install the virus and any spyware, trojans
pornography, penis enlargement adverts and DDoS attacks that
    come with it.

    7. You may now configure your preferred malware behaviour in
    /etc/evilmalware.conf .

    :D

might as well ask here. i have this silly problem which i can't figure out. i set up my dsl connection, in kubuntu, with the "sudo pppoeconf" and all works great. problem is sometimes i need to disconnect and reconnect my dsl and i don't feel like doing "sudo poff/pon dsl-provider" in the terminal every single time. in some distros, mandriva & suse for example, there is this utility in the sys tray which you can right click and disconnect/reconnect as you wish. how does one make that in kubuntu? what's the name of this utility?
    here's a screenshot:

    Ahh, point well taken.

I know it's still early days, and I'm probably not qualified to be asking this, but what are you guys hoping to see in Feisty Fawn?

Personally the things I've had most trouble with are:

    * Wireless support
    * Native resolution issues (had to fiddle with 915res for a fair while)
    * The ability to enable something like Beryl/Compiz without so much trouble (apparently FC6 has this out of the box)
    * Codec and multimedia support (okay so it's not that complicated but it could be better
    * Support for my gfx card (ATi Radeon Mobility 7500)... I'm aware that there are problems with this that aren't completely on the Ubuntu crew's side, but it's been a total PITA trying to get OpenGL working

No, I'm not asking for wizards (ergh) for all of the above tasks, but IMVHO some things should be a bit less trouble than they are.

Frankly they should make it very clear how to install all the stuff they cannot distribute because of the licensing terms, but that they know everyone wants. I mean nvidia/ati drivers is a total no brainer, noone is gonna be happy to use the vesa drver at 800x600 and no 3d acceleration with a card that's capable of 1600x1200. It's just plain stupid to make it so hard for users to find this stuff out, it seriously bugs me. Less crucial than drivers, but still a key issue is the whole codecs problem. Ubuntu are so in denial over this it's not even funny. Pretending like ogg vorbis is the only thing anyone could ever think to use. Yeah, right.

It's entirely possible (and not even hard) to install this stuff, but it bugs me that they cannot offer a more complete solution for this. Hell, ship a couple of install scripts would ya at least. Instead you have to dig through the wiki or some user maintained threads and use silly solutions like automatix (which doesn't even offer you a choice of versions for what you install) to get what you want.

That alone would greatly improve the out-of-the-box experience for lots of users.
