Loving it :)

I don't feel at home just yet, and the installation procedures for some packages are a little intimidating, but I'm sure I'll get used to it...

I'd feel even better if I could get the w32 codecs to install...

Yes, you do want them to be installed. And I finally figured out how to install them.

If you go there http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html scroll to Binary codec packages and install the archive. Extract it and copy all the files to /usr/lib/win32. I think the directory win32 is not there, so you have to create it.

Mind you, in the archive you download, they say that you should extract them to another directory, but that does nothing. When it comes to a win32 codec, all media players look for the path /usr/lib/win32

Thanks Jack, I'll give that a try

EDIT: Is there a Linux-based service for streaming live football matches? I've been using PPlive and TVAnts in WinXP and I'll look around for Linux alternatives, but has anyone got a tried and trusted solution?

I am not sure this is a good solution as this package you'll install has ALL the codecs not only win32. But I can't be bothered to find out which ones are win32 and which are not.

Streaming on Linux, we once read that TVAnts works under wine.

Edit: As for the ultimate Linux streaming client, that works without any emulator, we are still wiaiting for Martin to write it.

I'd say wine/vmware.

One of those Italian clients did have a linux version, which sort of worked, but I don't remember the name.

mplayer will play just about every stream imaginable, but for that to work you have to give it a url.

You are talking direct stream here. Is it possible to give it a URL similar to the ones these P2P clients give?

I very much doubt that. p2p streaming is probably similar to torrent, which means the client has to negotiate a connection in real time with different hosts at the same time and 'changing weather conditions' so to speak. It also has to transmit data (I'm guessing).

Contrast that to mplayer just reading bytes from a stream, not much different than reading a a file from disk (or floppy, for an example of a slow streaming source).

Ok fine.

Is there a way to see how torrent clients work and copy their bahaviour to create a P2P client for streaming? Maybe with the help of a windows P2P but modify it to be run on Linux.

Of course, torrent is an open protocol, azureus' source code is open as well.

That doesn't mean whatever p2p protocol these streamers use is open as well. If you had the source code to the client, you could port it, but I'm guessing part of the reason they won't do that is cause they don't want to expose what's in there.

People, you do know that you don't need kubuntu-desktop just to install amarok right? Having both gnome and kde is pretty pointless if you only use one. I only use selected apps from either one.
Yes, we do know, I install it however because I can't be bothered to then install kopete, and kate, and konqueror and whatnot if the need ever arises..

installing kubuntu-desktop does that for me.. :p

..and who said I don't mind KDE once in a while? :D

I seem to have had a bit of a hiccup...

I had some spare time on my hands, so I decided to take the time to install Windows on the NTFS partition I'd set aside for it. I booted up using the Windows CD and started the install process, but it did the same thing as the first time (shut down my computer without warning... I'm beginning to suspect I've got a bung WinXP CD).

When I tried to boot up my system again, all I got was a blank screen. I suspected that my computer was trying to boot up Windows, but it wasn't installed properly so it just got stuck.

So I fired up the Ubuntu Live CD and formatted the partition using GParted, and removed the 'boot' flag from it, but when I rebooted again I got the message "Operating System not Found". That's kind of strange because the NTFS hda1 didn't have anything on it in the first place, so I thought I'd restored things back to normal...

(see screenshot) What's wrong with my current setup, and what do I need to do in order to get my beloved Ubuntu booting up again?

    right...

last night, after finishing the ISO download, i wrote the image onto my cd-rw and tried installing a fresh copy of Edgy after a few attempts of upgrading from the CD failed.

everything went fine(the same mouse problem was there), after formatting the partitions and all, the installation stock at 25%!!! i didnt know what to do. i just pressed the reset button and tried installing it again, but still, stuck at 25%!!!

i said fuck it and tried booting to Windows and GRUB gave a bloody error! so i cudnt boot to windows, and couldnt install Edgy properly. u had a feeling that maybe the scratches on my rw caused the 25% hangup. so reinstalled windows, wrote the ISO into a new cd-r, installed Edgy FINALLY!!!

gotta go and personalize it and install the multimedia codecs n stuff!

kinda pleased with FF 2.0. but why cant i fuckin go Back using the Backspace button!!!!

Oh no nothing is wrong with RPM per se, but Ubuntu is a Debian based distro, and you should be looking for packages ending with .deb. RPM means Red Hat Package Manager, and its for Red Hat.

However in the rare case that you need to install an RPM on Ubuntu, you could use a tool called alien.

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install alien
