Ever tried large writes? Any performance problems?

Graham: You don't have to make it 15, but if you do you'll be very comfortable. Don't you want to be?
I'm all in for comfort.

Had I not got bored of changing distros, I would have gave this one a try

https://www.scientificlinux.org/

Maybe vlatko who is ready to test any distro there is would like to give it a try :smoke:

When was the last time you didn't use that excuse? :p
5:19 :disagree:

I booted up using the Windows CD, and when it came time to create my partitions, my notebook literally switched itself off without any explanation. I tried that once more and it did the same thing, and then I thought "bugger this, I'll install Ubuntu first".

I fell asleep halfway through the installation which explains the slight delay in my return, but installation was an absolute breeze, and I'm almost expecting my system to make me reboot at least 3 more times before it's ready to use.

So at this point I'm using my fresh new Ubuntu installation, and Windows XP has yet to be installed... which makes me wonder... should I even bother? I think I'll see how long before I find myself needing to install Windows.

Time to go and personalise the heck out of my system! :D

Thanks guys ;)

I'm loving my Ubuntu experience so far, except for one thing that's really bugging me...

it saddens me as a long-time Mozilla/Firefox fanboy to report that for some unknown reason, my Firefox locks up for about 30 seconds at a time, every few seconds. I've tried reinstalling and that didn't work, so I'm out of ideas :(

What did you install? dapper or edgy?

FF 1.5 or FF 2??

Edit: These could be helpfu

I already did, but there are little things that bug me about it, that I know I can probably change given a little effort, but why go to that effort when I've got Firefox?

Some petty examples would be that F6 doesn't highlight the address bar, and I can't "search as I type" like I can in Firefox :)

EDIT: Can anyone explain why I often see a horizontal line underneath my cursor, following it around? It's not a big deal but I must admit it's a little off-putting

gray, a few essential commands you need to do:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
This'll install kde (along with amaroK and a few other goodies :D)

    and then this:
    http://getautomatix.com/wiki/index....28K.2CX.29Ubuntu_6.10_i386.2Camd64_.28Edgy.29

    sudo apt-get install automatix2..
It can automate the installation of all the codecs you need (believe me, it can be a pain), plus adobe acrobat support, flash, firefox 2, swiftfox, wine, the works ;)

Yep, I've installed Amarok and Automatix2 already, but I'm holding off on KDE for now because what I've got on my plate at this point is already pretty immersive, and I don't think it'd be healthy to take the plunge into KDE yet, but I'm sure I will in due time :)

actually, the only reason I install kubuntu-desktop is because of amaroK and KDE libs..

So, seeing as you've installed amaroK already, you have kdelibs as well.. kudos :D

Anyways, you checked out kopete yet? It's the best IM client IMO

EDIT: KDE sucks anyways, stick with gnome :D

Now you're starting to be sane :D

You are a long time KDE user, why would you go to Gnome?

    Ahh right; cool then :)

Yep, I think it was vlatko who told me about Kopete, and I'm using it now, though I rarely IM with people unless I've got something in particular to say. I do wish it supported voice conversations though, because I'm overseas from all of my friends back at home, and even though I usually use Skype, necessity calls for compatibility with the MSN voice protocol :disagree:

How's it feel to be cool, Graham?

People, you do know that you don't need kubuntu-desktop just to install amarok right? Having both gnome and kde is pretty pointless if you only use one. I only use selected apps from either one.
