Yeah I realised that as soon as I tried to install drivers for it for the first time... oh well, the hard part's over and it's bringing me XGL eye-candy goodness. I just wowed my family with a little demo of the cute little effects :)

My mum loves the Cube, though practically speaking I don't really think I'll use it much, except for showing off.

Cheers vlatko, that'll definitely come in handy!

Man I just realised how much of a whole new dimension Compiz/Beryl/XGL is going to be, and I don't think I have the energy at this time of day to be able to set it all up, so I'll probably get some sleep and come back to it tomorrow.

I'd made it one of my main goals this week to get my gfx card working :geek: so I'm rather happy and looking forward to playing around with it now :D
Ya but thats for kids ;)

Well, call me a kid :) I don't game anymore so I may aswell use the grunt for something.

The only thing I find practicality in is the ability to watch full screen movies while I'm doing other things

Oh well, it was enough to cause a stir and convince my household that Linux is better than Windows, so I can't complain ;)

Actually I did, and I read the thread, but I know that I won't be using it for a long time. As was mentioned in the thread, it was a good learning experience for me to learn how to get everything set up so it worked.

I must grow up quickly, because I'm ready to stop using it now :) Though I will keep it installed so I can fire it up when I'm showing off Linux to my friends.

I would do the same, if my PC had a little bit more juice....512MB isn't good enough these days:tdown:

I don't understand; what has your RAM got to do with keeping XGL installed? Unless you're saying you have 512MB of HDD space, in which case I'm impressed you installed Linux in the first place :D

All that eyecandy just makes my system slow and a bit unresponsive...I am guessing it's the RAM and not the processor. As my processor is P4 HT...

what I'm saying is, why does your RAM limitation prevent you from keeping XGL installed but dormant? What I meant to say is that I won't be running Beryl/XGL but I'll have it handy so I can switch it on if I need to show off my shiny Ubuntu to anyone.

btw I have 512MB on my notebook too :(

I just don't see it worth the hassle of a installing and configuring a jerky dormant xgl. Now if it was smooth that would be another story.

I installed Beryl on my Bro's 2GB brand new Toshiba Qosmio (sp?) and it works like a charm:D....its not dormant over there its permanent;)

I feel it's more the video card.

Btw graham, when you say you would 'try linux' you really meant it, didn't you? I see you're ripping it up :D

:D I thought I made it clear that I was hanging around for keeps ;)

I'm going to make a sweeping and definitive statement here: uTorrent is better than Azureus. No questions asked... I'm running it under wine right now and it's giving me great speeds for little memory, whereas Azureus would slow down my system like a mofo and decide to stop downloading for no reason at all, crashing every now and then along the way

Yeah, but not everyone makes the decision and then immediately dives into everything that you have, respect bro :D

Get this, I've run azureus alongside vmware playing fm07 without a hitch :D A note of caution: if you've not come across the HIGHMEM kernel option yet, don't try this :D

Show-off! :smoke:

Don't worry about me, I won't be touching Azureus with a long pole for a while... I've been scarred by the only piece of software to not "Just Work(s)"

Hehe for me it was on a boring Saturday morning, I impulsively bought a Linux magazine with SUSE CD's with it.

How are you playing FM? Wine or VMware? Is it with commentary or a fully functional 2D pitch?

BTW Martin, your blog is worth $4,516.32!! Sweeet :D

Ummm... this seems like a stupid question considering I've figured out most other things via the Ubuntu forums (excellent community)

How do I toggle Mplayer's "Always on Top"?

(I should just use XGL :p)
