This is Linux, @gray. Freedom of choice and all that. Just because you use Ubuntu doesn't lock you into Unity. Everything is just an apt-get install away. I ran Cinnamon for a long time, right now I'm trying KDE (but thinking of going back to Cinnamon).
I'm currently using Mint + Cinnamon after trying out KDE, MATE and LXDE. I tried Compiz again and was disappointed to find that it's still as buggy as it was 5 years ago.
Did you get an alert that 14.04 was out or just knew it was coming? I still get updates for 12.04 and it's fine. Should I update? Would I lose everything I downloaded like sopcast, vlc, cairo-dock...

I was on 13.10 and alerts telling me 14.04 was available. I was getting updates for 13.10 but they're gonna stop come June I think. I didn't lose anything.

12.04 is what they call a Long Term Support release. This is really good for people who don't want to upgrade frequently - you can just keep using the same release and you'll get updates for a full 5 years. But there is a small risk that really new programs won't run on it.
If you're not using an LTS then you will get notifications that encourage you (but not force you) to upgrade to a new release every 6 months. 14.04 just came out and that too is an LTS, so it's supposed to be extra stable and nice.
I keep having to enable Ubuntu Unity Plugin because it automatically disables itself. The menu bar and the unity panel disappear as a result until I re-enable. Is there a particular reason why this keeps happening and is there a permanent fix for it? I can't find anything on google.
I upgraded, fresh installed and don't like that 14.04.1. Freezes and shit. Can't arrange item by date, size, etc...can't select the E key to use as a € sign, can't shut down because of conflicts with Cairo-Dock, can't download my network usage monitor app...Back to 12.04.
Not sure exactly what it does in the background. On the surface it makes the menu bar and the unity launch appear. When it's disabled they don't appear and the terminal can't be opened using the keyboard shortcut.
I have to access the terminal using a short cut I've created and enter "ccsm" to access the compiz configuration settings manager to re-enable the plug-in.
edit: The description reads:
The OpenCompositing Project brings 3D desktop visual effects that improve usability of the X Window System and provide increased productivity.

I have an 8 week linux course & the first week we have to install & peck around 3 distros. Ubuntu, Centos & Arch. Ubuntu & Centos are rather staright forward but Arch is a bit of a challenge. I have it running with Gnome 3 but my Wifi has gone nuts. As soon as I fixed my touchpad my wifi started asking for authentication at all times. Even I type in the right password am still not getting anywhere. @Martin can you help?

It could be that the wifi driver is flaky. Try using "lspci" to find out what kind of hardware it is and google around for arch + [that]. "dmesg" might also provide some clues.
