There's been lots of evens, like genocide in Rwanda and Burundi, where close to a million people were slaughtered.

We are talking about a single event. Anybody recalls any that would instantly take 100,000 lives?

The current war in Iraq would be pretty high on the list as well.

the number of the oficially death is reaching 120 000 ..but the world's intention should instead shift to the 5 million people in need of immediate help...

its is very sad when the best is still not good enough...

As far as civil wars and genocide are concerned, a million people died in Rwanda in 1994.

Did anyone see, a couple of months ago, a TV documentary in which scientifics of the world predict that a certain volcan in the Canry Islands is going to crumble which will eventually create a huge tsunami that will destroy the East Coast of America? Apparently, it's a certainty! Only 'when' is left to be known.

But that was an "inside thing".....world found out about that years later.
Genocide in Croatia and Bosnia was happening in front of whole world, live TV coverage of mass killing and ethnic cleaning. It tooked 4 whole years and cca half of milion dead people for NATO and world to react. It was a question of our nation independence and survival. And I hird that the "Tuku-Watu-Futu-Maku" Rwanda war started cuz of stollen chicken.......source CNN few years ago.

The big concerns following a tsunami are very similar to those following a flood or hurricane: typhoid, dysentery, and dehydration. Theoretically, these tragedies are much more preventable than the immediate deaths due to drowning and the force of solid objects when swept in the waves. But it's a major public health crisis now that, probably first and foremost, needs addressing with fresh water and antibiotics.
