To me, the Tsunami itself is not the most frightening circumstance of this natural disaster, the possibilities of disease and famine are much greater.

Believe it or not, I have heard of many stories of people on boats who were actually safe, as they stayed affloat on top of the Tsunami as it wisked by onshore.

exactly, the most thing to fear now is disease...

they are already spraying the dead bodies with antibacterial stuff and they are providing injections for the people there, i hope it stops at this level...

But that was an "inside thing".....world found out about that years later.
Not really, we were informed on a daily basis about the massacres there. Depends on the coverage your national medias gave it, Rwanada wasn't necessarily a priority in certain countries less attached to this part of the world!

What do you mean 'it was an inside thing'? Sure, every civil war is by definition. Ex-Jugoslavia included. If I'm readin,g you correct, and I like to think I am, you are suggesting that the two genocides differ in some way?

Btw, Zlatan said 250.000, you're mentioning 500.000. Who shall I depend on this?

Well, the wars in Bosnia and Croatia werent civil wars as both of them were independant, UN recognized nations, and altho the Serbs claim it was a civil war, the paramilitary and volonteer Serb forces were aaided by Serbia, Milošević and the Yugoslav National Army.

BTW, I think 500.000 is a bit of an exaggeration.

Don't play on words! When the conflict began, we were referring to the particular region as Yugoslavia. It's only later (in 1992) that a couple International institutions (i.e. the UN and the EEC) acknowledged the independance of some countries forming Yugoslavia.

Bosnia was recognized as an independant nation by the US on April 7th 1992, and accepted as a full UN member on May 22nd 1992, after 70% of the population declared they wanted to seperate from Yugoslavia in a referendum held in February 1992.

    The war started after that.

Fair enough Zlatan, I'll trust you on the dates. So technically, it isn't a proper civil war but I'll nonetheless keep calling a cat a cat even though for some reason you see things differently!

Anyways, we've long digressed. Back to topic...

Yeah, IIRC the date that usually taken as the start of the war is April 22nd, with the first two casualties.

I've been watching CNN since 1994.

The only crap they talk about is that every sports section on CNN International (not broadcasted in the US btw) starts with American Sports. Pisses me off.
I refrain from watching any of the american news networks (way too slanted). Still not as bad as Fox, which the head chairman is Bush's Cousin.

I really cannot agree that CNN is too slanted. Someone who makes an accusation like that is not familiar with the top 3 news networks here, and decides to "sterotype."

Did anyone see, a couple of months ago, a TV documentary in which scientifics of the world predict that a certain volcan in the Canry Islands is going to crumble which will eventually create a huge tsunami that will destroy the East Coast of America? Apparently, it's a certainty! Only 'when' is left to be known.
Yeah I saw this...part of the volcano will slice off (I think the volcano is called Gran Canary...not to be confused with the island Cran Canaria), slide into the sea, and create a surge which will swamp most coastlines from Florida to Ireland.
However, there is a mid Atlantic early warning system in place which will warn of this hours before it reaches any of the coastlines involved.

As for the fisherman at sea, the wave only builds up as it approaches land. At sea, the wave has a much larger wavelength...and you would hardly notice it...but as it approaches shore the reduction in depth changes is properties, and forces the water to rise.

I can't think of any links off hand...but the programme I saw was a BBC Horizon...I'll try the BBC website and try to find something there...

...and I'm not a geologist, but did study 'Geology and Soil Mechanics' a million years ago when a student
