BUFFON READY FOR REST
Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is keen to secure Champions League qualification for Juventus as soon as possible, so that he can shake off a back injury in time for Euro 2008.
Buffon played against Spain in a midweek friendly, but would prefer time off towards the end of the season to recover full fitness for Italy's European challenge, which begins on June 9 against Holland in Bern.
"I want to win a Champions League place but I am not at my best," Buffon said to Gazzetta dello Sport.
"To return to the top I need at least 20 days' rest."
The former Parma stopper was earlier this month named the world goalkeeper of 2007 by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, his fourth such award in five years.
And he believes he can keep up the intensity until Juve secure qualification to Europe's top club competition.
"I train with a certain amount of caution, but it is not true that I cannot play three matches in one week," Buffon said.
"Treatment and rest are the best medicine."
Reserve goalkeeper Emanuele Belardi has already featured three times this Serie A season and may yet be called upon if Juventus can continue their good form, which culminated in last Saturday's 2-1 vicory over league leaders Internazionale.
That result gave the Bianconeri a nine-point cushion to fifth place, but also put them within six of Roma in second.
Much of their recent success can be attributed to Alessandro Del Piero, and if he plays on Sunday he will break the all-time Juventus appearance record of 552, set by sweeper Gaetano Scirea in the 1970s and 80s.
Claudio Ranieiri can also welcome back Cristiano Zanetti (thigh) from a three-week injury lay-off, and he will slot into midfield alongside Mohamed Sissoko with Zdenek Grygera expected to make way.
Jonathan Zebina (thigh) and Jorge Andrade (knee) remain sidelined from the Juve defence.
Parma left-back Paolo Castellini is convinced the tactical changes made by new coach Hector Cuper can lead them to victory against Juventus.
Last weekend Cuper suffered his first defeat, falling to two late Massimo Maccarone goals at Siena, since replacing Domenico Di Carlo at the helm a fortnight ago.
But Castellini says the change has boosted confidence at the club and they are sure of at least a point against the Bianconeri.
"We do not go to Turin convinced that a point is enough, neither do we leave from Parma in the knowledge we are already beaten," said the 29-year-old to club website
www.fcparma.it.
"A point in Turin would be important, (but) we will try to win because if you do not try, you are sure not to get anything.
"The mindset that Cuper has instilled in Parma is to make sure of the points against whichever team we play.
"We must attack and try always to win, making sure we have the balance a team must have.
"These ideas are developing well. We have players of great quality in attack, so it is right that the coach decides to deploy the team in an offensive manner."
Parma lie in 15th place, but are now only a point above the relegation zone after Cagliari's successful appeal in midweek against a three-point deduction.
Argentinian coach Cuper has his attacking options limited by the suspension of Cristiano Lucarelli, and will use his absence to strengthen the midfield with Daniele Dessena and McDonald Mariga, who was suspended last week.
Luca Cigarini is set to drop to the bench, with former Juventus youth player Andrea Gasbarroni starting just behind Igor Budan in attack.
