Gigi's on top of the world Friday 21 March, 2008

Juventus custodian Gigi Buffon was proud to receive the Best Goalkeeper Award from the International Federation of Football History and Statistics.

In January of every year, the IFFHS make a complex series of mathematical calculations to ascertain the world’s best No 1.

Buffon came out on top for the fourth time, having won the 2003, 2004 and 2006 awards and was presented with the prize at Juve’s Vinovo training complex yesterday.

“It is a great pleasure to receive this award,” the Azzurri star told the Juventus Channel.

“It is so nice because it is based on a very detailed study of statistics and the fact that I’m getting this for the fourth time says that I must be doing something right.”

Buffon will need to be at his best this Saturday as Juve travel to San Siro for the all-important Derby d’Italia against leaders Inter.

This is the fourth time in the last five years that Buffon has won the prize, having also emerged victorious in 2003, 2004 and 2006.

Two delegates from the IFFHS turned up at Juventus’ Vinovo training ground yesterday to present Buffon with his award.

Meanwhile in other news Juventus have entered a 15 year marketing partnership with Sportfive Italia S.r.l.

As part of the agreement, Sportfive will have the right to exclusively sell the naming right of Juve’s new stadium and to also market part of the sky boxes and VIP seats. Juventus will in return receive €6.25m per year as compensation.

FORZA GIGI....
What's particularly curious about this is that he spent most of 2007 playing in Serie B and still won the award. How crazy is that?!

Forza Gigi! Forza il capitano futuro!

Buffon Wants Lampard At Juve

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has hinted that he would like to see Frank Lampard at the club, after praising the Chelsea midfielder.

Buffon was speaking to Tuttosport in the aftermath of Juvenus’ superb 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Inter, at San Siro on Saturday night.

“We have a genetic heritage that has been passed down since the time of Vialli which displays strong character, grit, and determination that allows us to overcome any technical deficiencies,” the 30-year-old explained.

“This time [against Inter] we have shown that if we are at 110% we can play against anyone, even Inter.

“The problem is that you can not give 110% for an entire season, and when you are only at 70 %, it is in these moments that you need to be equipped with enough champions to still be able to win.”

Buffon was then asked if the Serie A title race was now open again, considering the fact Roma only trail Inter by four points.

"The Championship reopened? If we were in Roma’s position then yes,” said the world’s number one shot-stopper.

“However the Giallorossi have something to pay in the Champions League. It is too bad that it is not us in Roma’s position.”

Finally Buffon signaled his intention to reach the Champions League final in the next two or three years.

"I believe in the Champions League final in the next two or three years because I think this team can return given time,” he said.

“Lampard? Well, he is an outstanding player and is doing well in a team similar to ours.”

Chelsea star Lampard has been heavily linked with a summer move to the Stadio Olimpico in Turin.
