At you service, captain!

My Italian is by no means perfect but he means something along the lines of: After yesterday's game I almost had to laugh because when I succeed in stopping a penalty we don't (always) end up winning the game. From now on I won't try anymore, or better I will only try to stop the penalties that occur during the 90 min.

Buffon: «The match against Chievo is the first of 38 finals»

A few more days of waiting (4 to be precise) and Juventus will return to face the championship. The bianconeri will start off with a home match against Chievo.

Gigi Buffon launched his challenge on his official website www.gianluigibuffon.com. The number one analyzed the value of the squad: «In the pre-season we recived important and positive signs. We have improved a lot compared to last year and this cannot but help our enthusiasm and self-esteem grow. A great atmosphere was immediately created in the dressing room between us players and the technical staff».

Juventus, therefore, will start off with a will to re-win the tricolour. It is easy to indicate the most fearsome rival: «A few days ago, when we won the Trofeo Tim in pescara, I could see Inter at work. The nerazzurri impressed me, confirming the feeling that they will once again be the team to beat, but this must discourage us at all but give us ulterior motivation to improve further».

To keep up the pace with the nerazzurri, all at Juventus know that every match is important. The championship is not only won through the direct encounters and this Gigi Buffon is well aware of: «We must enter the field every time with the determination not leave any points to anyone because every point may weigh on the final table. We are about to play 38 finals and the match against Chievo is the first one. We are immediately faced by a delicate and tricky match against the Veronesi who will come to Turin full of enthusiasm after having avoided relegation last year when they amazed all those who were already sure of their demotion to the Serie B in the middle of the championship. We must be careful with regards to the organization of their game, to their rhythm and pay attention to Pellissier».

Buffon never tempted by City

Gigi Buffon has admitted that he was unsure of his Juventus future – but would never have joined Manchester City.

The Italian international was linked with the mega-rich club following their takeover, but a move to City was not on his mind.

“There was interest from Manchester City, but with respect, it wasn’t for me,” he told La Repubblica. “I have a wife, a child, roots. I had to think for three and soon I’ll be thinking for four [another child is on the way].

“They wouldn’t have convinced me even if they offered to double my wages. I respect money, but in life there are things that are priceless.”

Although the former Parma No 1 wasn’t tempted by a switch to the new financial super power of the English game, he concedes that he wasn’t sure Juventus wanted him anymore.

“It was October and rumours about me were circulating, strange ones,” he continued. “Nobody was denying them so I started to question whether they were true.”

In a bid to get a better understanding of the situation, Buffon asked for showdown talks with club officials.

“I wanted to know if the club were still looking to rely on me,” added Gigi. “They responded with conviction and surprise to my doubts.

“I also took the opportunity to confirm what the club’s project was. When you are used to fighting for victories, your performance level drops if you aren’t that competitive.”

Juventus made their intentions clear in the summer by buying Diego and Felipe Melo, as well as a number of other individuals.

The club’s spending has got the fans dreaming again but the custodian is remaining cool, calm and collected.

“It’s right for the fans to be excited,” he added. “We have our desires, but we know we have to face reality.”

Juventus are next in action on Sunday when they travel to Roma. Inter face Milan in the derby on Saturday.

How could he ever doubt his status to Juventus community?

Grande Gigi!

Buffon: Italy, look to Juve

Gianluigi Buffon confirms the Italy squad should look to Juventus for inspiration and leaves the door open for Antonio Cassano.

Coach Marcello Lippi has picked eight Bianconeri players for the World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Hungary, while he also prompted a row with Inter boss Jose Mourinho when he tipped the Turin giants for the Scudetto.

“It is only right that the Juve fans dream and make wild flights of fancy towards the title,” said Buffon.

“We must be realistic and not it is very difficult, as Inter are the strongest overall side and a real tank.

I honestly did not understand what Mourinho was trying to say. I will only point out they already took two Scudetti off us, now they want to take our hope too…

It would be Juve’s first victory since the Calciopoli scandal of 2006 saw them demoted, but they are top of the table and have packed out the Italy squad.

“This is a club that focuses heavily on homegrown talent, so it is only natural that the Azzurri Coach would look to Juve,” continued Buffon.

Cassano has again been dropped from the squad and it looks as if the Sampdoria starlet will never be able to do enough to convince Lippi.

“He is not a ghost following the side around, but I don’t envy Lippi his job,” added the goalkeeper.

“I read his statements on Cassano and there was no finality to them. When Roberto Donadoni was in charge, Cassano and [Alessandro] Del Piero were last-minute additions to the Euro 2008 side.

“The team overall comes first and we all need to work together on that. We need to rediscover the team spirit that was so sorely lacking in the Confederations Cup.

“The only way to do that is through playing good football, notching up wins and knowing how to sustain pressure as a unit.”

Claudio Ranieri was sacked at Juventus with two rounds left of last season and begins again today at Roma.

“I am happy for him. Roma was what he wanted and he is the ideal man for that club. The rapport with the team had not collapsed at Juve, just with a few individual players.

“The rumours on who would replace him were flying around for months and in those circumstances it’s inevitable you lose your authority over the squad.”

gotta love superman
