Not just that, but they are the only team in the first knockout round that played at home (why didn't Italy play in Rome, or the Netherlands in Amsterdam?) and if they make the final they will play 6 out of 7 matches at home.
And what favors them even more, due to the covid rules in Britain and the mandatory 10-day quarantine, England's opponents always play without fans. Even hosts who organized entire tournaments by themselves weren't as favored as England are in this EURO, jointly organized by 11 countries.

It has to be said that club football is so far ahead of international football. On paper maybe France touches one of the best club sides. But in terms of cohesion and quality of football you can't replicate what players do playing together every week. You can have some of the middling teams playing with fantastic energy and spirit but far inferior quality of players. Maybe Italy are the closest there is to what you see from a big club side on the balance of fluid football and quality of players, but they still fall short. And of course one average performance and you're probably out at the QF stage. I thought both teams today played average and one had to go through.

It seems that at the end of most games of this tournament, there are no more game plans, and the winning goals scored by first passing the ball to the wings and then score from the crosses. Whether headers or tap-ins, the tired defences have no time to react.

It is a refreshing change. However I do agree with the notion that the perfect game of football finishes 0-0. As a spectacle it is perhaps why football is struggling and needs actions like the ESL breakaway.
