Calcio Debate: No Chiellini, No Juve Defence?
Juventus fans will be biting their fingernails following the potentially serious injury to Giorgio Chiellini last night. Carlo Garganese asks whether this is a sign that the Bianconeri need to buy a top class defender?
My colleague Salvatore Landolina argued in a Calcio Debate several weeks ago that Juventus’ rather shaky looking defence could prove to be their undoing this season. I concurred with this view at the time, and I agree even more now following the events of last night’s Trofeo Berlusconi against Milan.
The Bianconeri did not play badly but still ended up being thrashed 4-1, mainly due to a series of defensive lapses. If the backline already looked slightly suspect with star stopper Giorgio Chiellini on the field, it looked downright chaotic at times after he was forced off injured.
Chiellini is expected to be out of action for between six weeks and six months after badly twisting his knee, and any long-term absence could prove to be absolutely disastrous for Juventus. Chiellini is quite clearly the only top-class defender in Juve’s squad. The young Paolo De Ceglie has shown signs that in the near future he may develop into an outstanding performer, but apart from the 21-year-old, mediocrity reigns supreme in the Old Lady’s backline.
Aside from Chiellini, none of Juve’s defenders would get into any of Italy’s other three members of the Big Four (Inter, Milan and Roma). In fact if we are to extend this hypothesis to Europe, none would make it into any of Juve’s main Champions League challengers; Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona. This does not bode well for the club’s chances in the prestigious tournament.
With Chiellini in the side (as well as Gianluigi Buffon in goal), the cracks in Juve’s defence get papered over. The 24-year-old is an absolute colossus, and is sometimes the equivalent of two men. Both Legrottaglie and Mellberg are made to look better than they are next to him, and this was evident when the pair played together for 65 minutes yesterday, and were repeatedly opened up. There may be defensive protection in midfield from Momo Sissoko and Christian Poulsen, but if Chiellini is forced to miss a large chunk of the season, the chances of Juve winning anything this campaign are very slim.
Zdenek Grygera on the right is steady but you are never left completely convinced by him, and indeed he had a shocker last night. The defensive deficiencies of Cristian Molinaro on the left are all too well known. The 25-year-old, who was to blame for two goals last night, is tactically worse than a Sunday League player. Molinaro’s crossing is dreadful also. All he really has going for him is absolutely lightning pace but this is often little consolation. Olympic 100m sensation Usain Bolt is the quickest sprinter in history, but that doesn’t make him a good footballer.
It is quite clear in my eyes that Juventus need to sign a top class centre back. I held this opinion even before last night, but the prospect of Chiellini now being forced out for an extended period of time has just further reinforced this point of view.
Unfortunately, with less than two weeks before the end of the transfer window, it is highly unlikely that any big name players will be purchasable, especially with European domestic seasons already started, or about to start. It remains to be seen whether Juve have made a mistake in not bringing in a top quality stopper this summer, but my early hunch, like most of my colleagues, is that this may prove to be their undoing.
What are your views on this topic? Do Juve need to buy a defender? Is their defence strong enough? Are they too reliant on Giorgio Chiellini? Would a long-term injury to the stopper be an irreparable blow? Goal.com wants to know what YOU think.
