from watching Stendardo play for both us and Lazio, I think he's much better than Mellberg, but I agree that neither is the answer to our problems
we need to splash out the cash and get a great defender, because with Mellberg and Legro starting in the middle, we are going to get blasted by Serie A's better teams, and any CL opponents we face

No more excuses...everyone saw this trainwreck from a mile away. One injury and the whole defence is shot, eerily similar to the Nesta situation in Milan. To think that Juventus would've learned...
The addition of Mellberg was a matter of adding depth and nothing more. He is not a starter, regardless of what Ranieri or anyone else says. Legrottaglie cannot be trusted with the role of a defensive stalwart simply because of his frequent errors. He is often bailed out by having Chiellini beside him, and at the moment there isn't a defender in the squad as cool and resilient as Chiellini.
Now is the time to sign Corluka, at any price. You're potentially killing two birds, maybe three, with one stone...you're fixing the temporary Chiellini problem and once Chiellini returns, he'll have a decent young defender beside him. If Ranieri wants to move Corluka to right back, he's adept there as well. It's win-win, so I say it's time to cough up the cash. He'll be under 15 million euros, anyways.
It doesn't hurt to dish out the money for quality every once and a while.
