Sao Paulo defender detained at airport
RIO DE JANEIRO, March 3 (Reuters) - Uruguayan defender Diego Lugano was detained at Sao Paulo airport on Wednesday after filling out an immigration form wrongly and insulting an official who asked him to correct it, Federal Police said.
The Sao Paulo defender missed his team's flight to Ecuador for Thursday's South American Libertadores Cup match away to Liga de Quito as a result of the confusion, team officials added.
'He was disrespectful,' said Wagner Castilho, head of the Federal Police at Sao Paulo's international airport, in an interview shown on Brazilian television.
'He filled in the form wrongly, then the agent told him to do it again. He got it wrong again, the agent asked him to do it for a third time but he tore up the form and threw it at the agent and swore.'
Castilho added: 'Professional athletes should set an example on and off the field.'
Police said that Lugano was released after questioning but will have to appear before a judge when he returns to the country.
'All I did was say 'that can't be right',' said the 23-year-old defender, who joined Sao Paulo last year.
Sao Paulo, who won the South American equivalent of the Champions League twice during the 1990s, have made an excellent start as they return to the tournament for the first time in 10 years, winning their opening games in Group Four.
Ecuador's Liga de Quito have also won their two opening games and head the group on goal difference.
Sao Paulo said Lugano travelled on a scheduled flight later on Wednesday.

Diego Lugano heeft een open sollicitatie aan het adres van Juventus gedaan. De defensieve sterkhouder van Fenerbahçe staat in de belangstelling van diverse Europese topclubs. Zelf heeft de Uruguayaans international een sterke voorkeur voor de Italiaanse grootmacht.
“Ik heb via mijn zaakwaarnemer vernomen dat veel prominente clubs naar mij hebben geïnformeerd”, verklaart Lugano in een interview met het Italiaanse Tuttosport. “Het geeft veel vertrouwen dat dit clubs van het kaliber Juventus, Milan en Real Madrid zijn", tekent de speler op, wiens goede Europese prestaties met Fenerbahçe niet onopgemerkt zijn gebleven.
Lugano arriveerde in de zomer van 2006 bij de club Istanbul en is sindsdien een vaste waarde. De 27-jarige speler, die Italiaans bloed met zich meedraagt, is duidelijk in zijn voorkeur. “Juventus is een wereldberoemde club, vooral in Uruguay wordt het team veel gevolgd. Dit komt mede door de inbreng van (oud-spelers, red.) Paolo Montero en Daniel Fonseca.”
De twintigvoudig international denkt verder klaar te zijn voor de stap naar de absolute top en onderstreept dit met zijn huidige prijzenkast. “Ik heb met Sao Paulo de wereldbeker veroverd en won met de club verder diverse prijzen.
