I think the quality just increased with time. I adore the guy who made it and who's still pretty young. He covered a pretty tough to carry story with very strong elements. It's very hard to deal with, or explain, things when it comes to symbolism, yin and yang, good vs evil, war vs peace, friendship and bonds. IMO everything is there represent of all the things. I liked how I can see jinchūriki like talking with inner-self and struggle with the soul while at the end even some parts of religions can be explained with meditation or with the birth of tree of life and mother of all. Story itself is quite complex as well and I like it just like the character development in it. The only thing I didn't like was the ending in a sense how some things happened way too fast so some of the main characters were left untold. But still, such thing is only a minor problem. Was it dragged way too much? Yeah, but only if start reading it now when you have 700 chapters so it looks like a burden. Like now when I see One Piece I'm like oh come on screw that! I never minded that and I wouldn't have any problem if it continued. In fact I was sad when I read the last chapter. What Naruto was/is to me is nothing but a perfect and definitely not for kids (well, they can read, but surely won't understand the essence).
The quality started dropping on part 2 imo . Part one was almost perfect , kishi was exellent in building the world of naruto not so exellent in continuing the story and shaping better characters .
Part 1
- Great characters backstory and character advancment
- Great fights . Fights were more intelligent and more balanced without godly jutsu .
- Great story
- Actions taken by the characters were believable (at least the major part of them)
- Great villain , Orochimaru .
- Great OST (Anime)
Part 2
- Fights start to get progressively worse , with powerups in every corner and lol jutsu
- Some characters didn't have any progress at all , some were forgotten
- Sasuke's character was totally ruined , he was made in some kind of psycopath emo kid
- Except the main guys , by the end of the manga thanks to lol power ups everybody else becomes fodder in comparision to them .
- Had a great starting villain in Orochimaru , changed him with madara as main which wasn't bad , but did it just so kishi could blow him up from nowhere . That was a LOLWHAT ? moment . And than the final villain came with little backstory and with the most cliche power of them all , the power of having all the powers .
- And last but not least , the one who rules them all
Talk No Jutsu . I refuse to believe that guys who have been planning for years and years get talked out to being good . And if you want to go with everybody can be saved attitude at least do it with everyone , not just with the ones you like (madara (in the end) / sasuke / nagato / obito) . I didn't see deidara/kakuzu/hidan/ get the talk no jutsu , nope they were just blown to pieces .
By the end naruto fell in conventional shonen tropes . It is a shame and i am dissapointed really , because it had potential to be something much more . That said althrough the drop of quality i still have never found it truly boring and still think it wasn't a bad manga overall (i would give it a 7/10) . I have been a fan of naruto probably since 12 , started reading the manga at 13-14 and it has been one of the constants of my life these past 9 years since I Became a fan . It has always been a weekly encounter , always waking up in a wednesday and reading the new naruto chapter . It saddens me that it's gone , now i have only one piece left and hopefully this one still has a long way to go before it finishes .
