Pirlo: 'Juventus too predictable'

Football Italia

Andrea Pirlo admits Juventus ‘are making too many horizontal passes and that makes us predictable’ after a 2-2 draw with Torino in the Derby della Mole.

The Bianconeri fought back for a 2-2 draw, but considering their recent poor form, a point against a team in the relegation battle is hardly something to celebrate.

Just like the 1-0 home defeat to Benevento, Juve shot themselves in the foot by giving away a goal with an awful back-pass, this time Dejan Kulusevski.

“We had started well, taken the lead, and that’s the most difficult thing against teams that defend,” Pirlo told DAZN.

“As usual, we make life complicated for ourselves. We had hoped for a different second half, but we made that error straight away and had to get back into it.

“The error was similar to the one we conceded against Lazio, unfortunately these are happening a bit too often and we have these lapses in concentration.

“We must learn that we cannot lose concentration for even a second, because the moment we lose the ball, it’s only right that we are then punished.

“When you play against teams that defend deep, it’s difficult to attack the space, so you have to go round the flanks and try to create some width. We do try these tactics, especially against sides who have five at the back.

“It’s important to get crosses in and above all put bodies into the box. After the second goal, we got the game back on track, hitting the woodwork and that chance with Cristiano. It’s only natural that against teams who pack their final third, we can’t move the ball quickly, as there aren’t any spaces.

“Mistakes happen, whether you are a player, a coach or a referee. We have to stay fully focused, stay on our toes and understand the moment we are going through. Some sharpness can be lacking after international duty, but we cannot afford to let go even for a moment now.”

Juve are now in fourth place, level with Napoli, and they go head-to-head with Gennaro Gattuso’s side in Wednesday’s rescheduled fixture.

“When you don’t win, you cannot be satisfied. We know that we have to improve, we’re trying to win games, as that helps everyone relax.

“We’re dropping a lot of points along the way so far this season and naturally we’ve got to do better.”

Pirlo was asked what he will focus on now that Juventus have a full week to prepare for games?

“We have to work on many football principles, such as positions and movements, finding more movement between the lines, especially against teams that defend deep.

“At the moment, we are making too many horizontal passes and that makes us predictable.”

Start of season most of the fans thought it was a good / very good summer mercato: https://www.juventuz.com/threads/rate-our-summer-mercato.44409/, it's the Pirlo effect that now everything seems shit. no way our team on paper is weaker than 2019/2020 which is the easiest comparison.

I'd say this team is also stronger than the one Allegri had in his last season.
polls as benchmarks, come on. somebody even said that anyone who'd vote less than 7.5 is an idiot or something similar. this midfield is a mess, danilo was a starter cm today, and we only play with 2 cm's  rabiot gets paid 7m a season and he's benched by a right back turned into left back turned into centre back turned into cm

2018/19 pjanic, matuidi would easily start for this team. 2019 mandzukic, 2019 chiellini too. even bloody emre can would start over danilo the cm. that's how strong our squad is right now. i'd take the '18/19 version of ronaldo, dybala, bentancur, alex sandro, tek and berna over this current one. we also had spina & kean. it wasn't a perfect squad, but injuries and motivation were a more pressing concern than raw quality.

and i'm not defending pirlo at all. we are underachieving even with this unbalanced squad. i have a feeling that this is still the 2nd best squad of the league despite the regression. in my book, this season is the proof that both pirlo and paratici failed.
