I'd think the main reason for the release is system fit, or lack thereof, the extra cap-space is just gravy.
Cap room can be very deceptive - you think it's plenty and then all of a sudden it's gone. No limit to how much a team can roll-over onto ext year and once 9ers build up a good team, keeping it together would be a lot easier.

In such a strong DB draft class, I don't expect the Pats to sign any DB free-agents except try to bring back their own - Logan Ryan (likely gone) and Duron Harmon. Patriots will reload in the secondary from the draft.
Would love to see Mycah Hyde come to the Pats but doubt they will be willing to pay him - loved Hyde out of the 2013 draft as a perfect fit for the Pats and still can't believe they didn;t go for him despite him falling to 5th round.

- way to milk the details No, not because the price is too high - although 9ers will have to give Cousins a big contract immediately - but because I don't believe that Cousins is the QB you want if your ultimate goal is to become a true contender. If the idea is to stop sucking and get to the level of being an above average team, then getting Cousins for that price is a good deal.
Cousins is a very capable QB, who seems to be smart enough to process info in real-time - read D coverages, go thru progressions, etc. What he ultimately lacks, and I don;t think that will change, is that "it" factor of a winner - he blinks in the spot-light, so to speak, he lacks that cutting-edge mentality.
In the end of the day, the difference between a great QB and just a good one is in the heart and mind of the player, not a matter of arm-talent.
If 9ers aim at becoming a contender 2-3 years from now, I would either go for Garoppolo or sink the ship completely for one of the QBs projected to come out in the 2018 draft and hope I get a winner.
Maybe Jimmy G or Darnold/Rosen/Allen prove to be "the man", maybe they don't ... what I do know for sure is that Cousins isn't.

#2) The contract that we would have to give him would average out to somewhere in the 16-18 million dollar range. Why do that when you can draft high enough to get one of the top QB prospects at a cap hit at 1/3rd that amount annually for the first few years?
#3) Assuming that they are a contending team, he will already be 28 or 29 by that time. The young guy that we could get would at most, be 25 years old.

I personally agree that for a team like the 9ers, who have one of the most talent-lacking rosters out there, waiting out the 2018 draft to get their QB will probably make the most sense.

For a team in a total rebuild like the 49ers, what is underwhelming? What was underwhelming to me was the inability to admit that they had to start over again, instead trying to find ways to be mediocre. Being mediocre works in Cleveland, it works in San Diego. It does not work for a franchise that has 5 Lombardi trophies.
