I don't have to explain how Muslims or worshipers of other religions go the extra mile, you should be able to see the difference between how your day-to-day life differs from your theirs.

There are two paths one can take in life. One path leads to God. It is full of 'thorns', struggles, and challenges. It is a difficult path but it's rewarding. Because when you put an effort into something and work for it you get to truly feel joy when you are rewarded for it.

We are free to pick this path or the opposite path. The path away from God is full of temptations. It looks and feels easy. It offers great joy in this life but none in the hereafter but since the ones that choose this path can't see beyond this world they continue on this path.

Actually in M's teachings you're not supposed to consume/have too much of something. Sugar is not forbidden but if you develop a habit out of it then you're supposed to break that habit.

Should I? If this were some kind of pattern, then surely we'd know about it, wouldn't we? It'd be common knowledge, no? Instead it's just something some (not all, by any means) religious people like to say. I don't even know what you meant when you said "go the extra mile", for all I know it could mean doing something that is completely irrelevant to the plight of other people like say, praying for them.

You are right though there are two paths one can go down, the path of truth,justice and dignity, morality without the incentive of threat, justice without the guise of higher planning, a path taken by the self-assured and unafraid and the path of Religion.

There are those of us that endeavour to do good simply becuase it is good not for divine reward, mocked for our beliefs as much as the next man but not to bitch about it. Not trying to convince anyone. Was simply stating the difference between someone who spends his life in accordance with God's instructions (as he/she see's it) vs someone who doesn't.
