I'll not say that Roberto Carlos has good defensive skills, because he doesn't. But, in terms of effectiveness, he has to be right up there because the simple threat of him going forward is more often than not enough to convince the opposing winger to stay back, just in case. Furthermore, he's the fastest left back out there with the possible exception of Ashley Cole. That hs to give him some credit, and his free kicks are a plus too. I mean, I don't like him, and I'd rather not have him on my team, but speaking honestly, he is maybe the most effective left back out there in terms of the complete performance required of the modern fullback.
