If im not mistaken, then Gerrard requested Barry personally. And by the looks of it, then Benitez trusts Gerrards opinion more then trusting Xabi Alonsos form.
So wether Xabi is on form or not, then i still think Barry is in the plans of Benitez, wich means that Alonso just will be another brick in the wall.

Guys Gareth Barry came out yesterday and said that he wants to go to Liverpool so he can play in the UEFA Champions League next season. His price is at 18 million pounds. Rafa Benitez is supposed to use the money from Alonso's transfer to get Barry. Liverpool already offered 13 million pounds and now they are just waiting for the deal to go through so they can pay the extra 5 million. After effectively preventing the negotiation for Inter's Dejan Stankovic to take off with their incessant protesting against the player's arrival, now they are trying to prevent another player from leaving.
The footballer in question is striker Vincenzo Iaquinta who, despite not playing as much as expected last season, has already won the hearts of the Juve fans.
The members of the online fan community VecchiaSignora.com wrote a letter aimed at the club's management regarding the Italian World Cup winner.
"There are some players who manage to synthesize with a run, a celebration, even with a mistake the spirit of a team," it says on the letter. "There are players who, as soon as they set foot on the training ground, you can see they are special by the look on their faces. And it doesn't matter whether they are first choice players or not. Vincenzo Iaquinta, despite being at the club just over 12 months, is all of these things.
"With his grit, his class, his determination, Iaquinta already represents a big part of this Juventus side. And it's for all these reasons that the fans love him, and that they don't want him to leave. Don't touch Iaquinta!"
It remains to be seen whether this move will be as effective as the fan protests against Dejan Stankovic's arrival...

In the era of paying JuventusMember.com members (me being one of them), I suppose a little of this is inevitable. But in general, I don't like the precedent it sets. Because a good board has to make unpopular decisions that are best for the longer-term health of the club at times (selling Zizou, etc.).
Last thing a weaker board needs is a bunch of whining fans with Internet accounts to bitch and moan about every single potential acquisition or sale. That will just tie some hands and create an expectation that fan approval will be required, when it should generally not be.
There's a reason we are fans and not running a board. If anybody who is a fan can somehow play a legitimate role in running a board, then our board is even more crap than we've been accusing it of being already.

Actually, Liverpool have made 3 offers for Barry. The first was 10 million pounds plus Crouch/Carson/Pennant/Guthrie/Riise. It was rejected in style by O'Neill, who raised Barry's valuation to 15 million pounds. Then we made a second which was 12 mil and the same "pick a player". Again dismissed by the Marty. Then we gave a straight cash bid of 15 million sterling. O'Neill raised his valuation of Barry to 18 million. Liverpool management then informed Aston Villa that there would be one more transfer bid for Gareth Barry and then we would look elsewhere. Barry, seeing his shot at CL glory and overall success being squandered, demanded he be transferred. O'Neill stated yesterday that he would allow Barry to leave if he is completely sure he wants to do so, but only if Liverpool pay the 18 million.

Maybe its just a smokescreen so he can tell the Villa board "Hey guys, I tried". I really wish we'd hold onto Alonso as he is one of my favorites. While fans shouldn't be taken into account for transfers, sanity should be. And I think it's wise and proper to respect the fans because that is what keeps the club going.
