Also let's not underestimate what a great job Iceland are doing. 10 defenders inside box, no quarters given.

No doubt there's no game plan at all. And Sampaoli wasn't their coach in qualifiers. Add that to the fact that Icardi was not taken to Russia and it seems that Messi is the one who is calling the shots.
Iceland did a great job of course but Messi fucked up too.

There were a few situations in 2nd half where he had a teammate out-wide, not marked, ready to cut inside, close to penalty box. He made a few wrong / selfish decisions.
Those situations were rare, almost allways his teammates stood still. He has the responsibility to unlock the defence and something happen, that's why they keep passing to him. His teammates just keep side ways passing until someone tries to dribble. Lack of game plan and horrible movement coupled with strong defending underdog team.
