I get it to some extent. If player A is overall a little worse than player B, but offers more workrate, it might benefit the team against a team like iceland, But in Argentinas case you sacrifice a player like Dybala for Meza, a player i've never heard of. Is it really worth the trade off?

I'm not defending the selection, I'm just pointing out that's it's not as outlandish as it's made out to be, also it's funny how France was criticized for Fielding players simply coz they are good at the expense of the team and now Argentina is criticized for the opposite :D
