(i'll get a new car when the current one literally falls apart. the new ones are shit anyway. 1 year old audi q1 of the belgian friend needed my old car's battery to jumpstart it. 1 year old car and the battery dies, how is that even possible lol)

The funny bit is it works the other way as well.

I won't give any names, but a relative of mine sold her house to the granddaughter of the founder of a pharmaceutical company. Her net worth is in the tens if not hundreds of millions.

The granddaughter drives a VW Tiguan lol.

It's not a bad car at all or anything. But if I was worth tens of millions, I wouldn't buy a Tiguan lol.

I think the Netherlands can be a bit of a nasty place sometimes. Like there can be so little mercy for people who get sick or become unemployed.

Belgium isn't some sort of socialist utopia and there are lots of things I'd like to change in our society. But I do think we are more forgiving towards people who have had a bit of bad luck.

Under Rutte’s reign we went from a country with a good socialistic foundation to neoliberalism, there’s indeed little room for sad stories. The government will help but financially it will be just enough to survive, those people don’t have a luxurious life at all.

Even though I’m often frustrated by decisions of the government, I also agree with the saying that the government is the last place you should look for help (unless youre sick/disabled of course).

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to study finances and how to save and invest in school to be honest. It's actually kind of crazy that this is not a subject matter at all in most countries.

I think most of them are aware of what they're doing, though. I just think they are giving their best to fake their lives.

I had some friend who literally suffered when logged in to Instagram because she couldn't stand how some people are travelling and she can't. I'm not even exaggerating. The lives of others literally hurt her and I'm definitely sure if she had more money she'd be splashing it on all on the travels just so she could take pictures there. Such group of people would instantly change their life style if there was some world wide fuck up and somebody cuts off the Internet. Once they can't show it on the Internet and once they don't have something to brag about, it's over for them. So I think it's about the fake image and not being able to digest the idea of having a "worse life" than somebody (usually a random person).

However, I do agree with what you're saying as plenty definitely need teaching on how to save. At my job I'm managing to save quite a lot while majority of co-workers with higher wages (a lot) and with a similar lifestyle spend their entire wages after like 2 weeks and then live struggling each day. I mean wtf

Not sure how it works abroad but over here I met quite a lot of people that try to stay out of radar. If they earn shitload of money they usually don't want to get noticed so they dress like shit and drive peasant cars lol

Maybe it's because some of us believe we need to be insanely happy all of the time, while just being content is a great state to be in.

What’s insane is the number of people I know who have taken on 6+ year financing of trucks at north of 6% lately. Feels like you have to be kinda braindead to jump on a vehicle at that kind of rate for so long.

For some reason people still think that seeing somebody on Instagram with cool travel and dinner photos instantly mean that they have a great and happy life they don't realize that such photos are literally moments, not 24/7 experience.

But I do believe that people go to therapies quite often because of the Internet/IG influence. I guess people are way too fragile nowadays.

I also think people have less and less patience. Everyone wants things instantly, whether that's money, travels, love, success, weight loss, etc. Nobody wants the marathon and imo majority of those things have no shortcuts.

see the thing here is these charlatans and "influencers" are trying to sell you a product: success

so they post their fake bodies created by video and photo editing tools and then try and sell you a fitness course.

they post photos of rented luxury cars and planes and mansions and try and sell you how to get rich courses.

they are selling you a product and it's not just for likes.

if your friend was trying to do this, at least she can claim it as settting a business. but she's doing to keep up appearances. i hope she can see the truth and fix it before she puts herself in deep debt
