Packing my stuff to travel to Brazil with the missus tomorrow. Haven't been there in over 15 years. Never really thought about going back there all those years so not sure what to expect.

Given the political chaos at the moment and how much I disagree with and despise it's current government and the ignorance that's taken over the place I've been trying to talk myself out of going. I've never been so stressed about a trip before. :claire:

I used to think that when I was a kid. Then I grew up and realized they’re the most violent and out of touch with reality people in the world. The only thing that’s exciting me is trying the local food again, used to love it. Oh and seeing old friends that I haven’t seen in 20 plus years.

Who are we describing here, Americans or Brazilians? :p

The worst part about it is that they've just about managed to survive without me. They got an intern in my place instead and while they're obviously suffering in terms of workload now, they are able to go on financially. They're going to keep squandering money of course. And I doubt that any of the lawyers will ever be paid what he or she is worth. But damn man, six years down the drain. That is one hard pill to swallow. Especially because it's a smaller firm, there were 8 lawyers. So of course after six years you develop friendships as well.
So they never needed your sorry salary demands when they could have gotten away with shoddy work from an intern. Yeah, that is not a recipe for advancement there. So be content for the six years of learning ... and be glad that environment would have been worse at seven years. (No pun intended.)

Wow. That's been quite a while. So many Brazilians in the 'hood here. They are honestly the most discriminated against group of people in Portugal. A little having to do with the atrocities they commit to the language. :p But more the stereotype that when something violent happens in Portugal, the presumption is that a Brazilian was involved. And as a generalization, it's often accurate. And it's different coming from America where you see that kind of bias along racial rather than national lines.

But I know way too many cool Brazilians back there... you've got nothing to worry about. :D

That sounds great. But yeah ... they picked up on the violent tendencies here for sure.

You and @GordoDeCentral were right, I was worrying too much for no reason. Sure Brazil has its problems and some areas can look very unpleasant to the eye but the food is great and there’s a cool vibe about it. Strangely enough it hasn’t changed one bit, it looks exactly as I remember. I’m having a blast and I just got here!

Sounds like a winner
Chicken dinner

9-5 till 65 doesn't sound like the good life.

I should get serious about finding a side hustle.

I've been saying that for about two years now.
A side hustle turns your 9-5 into a 9-5 + 5-1 for a rather extended while. Just sayin'.

Their direct competitor just asked me if I want to come over for an interview...

When I left they had the nerve to ask me not to go there btw. But going there right now feels like a declaration of war. And I'm not sure if I want to spend a couple of years fighting such a war. On the other hand it is a field of a law I'm interested in, so it is tempting.

You are dealing with lawyers, so that's a negative. But they can't prevent you from earning an income especially when they c*ckblocked you from staying around with them to do the same. Their loss and failure, IMO. I'd check it out, just not flaunt it.

The thing you have to know about Belgian law is that it is quite different from American law in the sense that you basically go to court over everything. Going to court is cheap here, compared to the cost in other countries. That means that, if I were to go to that particular law firm, I'd meet my former colleagues in court every week. As an opponent. You can imagine the sort of atmosphere I would be getting myself in to.
