That sort of reminds me. Why is that in pretty much all American shows, they make fun of Canadians? I never got that.
Maybe because Canadians are just milquetoast Americans without handguns? :p

Actually, South Park is about the only program I know that makes fun of Canadians. And then it works because few others have bothered to do such a thing. What makes it funny in South Park is that Canadians generally don't give us a whole lot to make fun of.

Most jokes involving Canada or Canadians here involve them being like odd cousins who live in suburban Buffalo, NY. (Though Vinman might dispute. :D )

Out the top of my head, "How I Met Your Mother" is one, "That 70's Show" as well...doesn't matter anyway, so basically it's all just harmless banter?

It is. The joke is that Canadians are pretty close to a mirror image of Americans in a number of ways, so we have to resort to making fun of them for silly things like fur hats, Canadian bacon, and donuts. John Candy was in how many movies about fictitious wars between U.S. and Canada?

The humor is in the lack of animosity, really. It's as if Del Piero teased Marcello Lippi for being a Tuscan.

Contrast this with, say, Mexico - which is fraught with racial stereotypes, language barriers, immigration freak-outs (none of the anti-immigrant rhetoric here even thinks of Canadians as a menace to society), etc.

Norwegians make fun of Swedes all the time too, but that's just plain inferiority complex. Since Americans think they are better than everyone else I'm assuming it's not that.
One of my favorite TV shows here of the past couple years just had a plot development where two future housemates pointed out their Swedish-vs-Norweigian differences. I'm wondering how deep they're going to go with that on TV. :D

And Swedes make fun of Norwegians all the time. French make fun of Belgians, Lebanese make fun of Syrian. It's just normal I guess when companies are close to each other and share a lot.

Not with this show. They have an insane level of attention to detail.

Another example from last Sunday's episode: in the background you can hear a speech by JFK at the time. It was broadcast on all TV networks simultaneously in 1963. Which, interestingly enough, was the customer demand of one of the prospective advertising clients earlier in the program.

Those kind of subtleties in the show are never accidental. Which is one of the main reasons I really like it.

So there is a chance that the Norway-vs-Sweden thing wasn't just slapped in there without much thought...

They did sometihng similar here where an irish girl returned home with an english fiance whos grandfather was a black and tan ( think the Waffen SS mixed with the Huns) when the village found out he got some beating, anywho they had the differences were quite subtle too, but that basically because we're the same, except the irish never sought dominion over any man

It's different because it's a NT full of French people that you're not a part of. It would be different if you lived there for like 8 years, I love the culture but it doesn't have to do anything with it. I feel the same about Italy probably but I'd never say something like that because I find it wrong and weird.
Exactly. It's basically the same thing as Martin saying "we girls", even though he has a penis, or at least claims to.

And what do I know about my own NT? I don't even know half the players on the team. And I don't care because the team sucks, it doesn't interest me.
That's absolutely no excuse. Poland isn't a nation that sucks in football like a North Korea or something of the sort. They make many competitions and have had several great players, suck as Boniek.

Just another cop-out in the quest of gloryhunting.

Pretty much what we're all doing here on the forum. Except I don't think you need an excuse to enjoy something or that you have to be eligible to enjoy it legitimately. These are juvenile games that kids play to determine who will and will not belong to their very special club. "Gloryhunter" is the instrument of the saddest bunch of amateur elitist wannabees.

0-3 to Slovenia, incidentally.

No, it's not. You're not a French citizen, but there is no such thing as citizenship for a club team. That's the difference. And I'm not going to change my opinion on this. It's absolute lunacy and we might as well eliminate international football if people think the way you do, Martin.

I'm not a French citizen and you're not a citizen of Torino. And yet you chose arbitrarily to enjoy their achievements. Just like I chose to enjoy the achievements of various teams geographically distant.

Notice that there are quite a few people who think just the way you do, but on club level. And they would be the first to denounce you in the exact same terms you're denouncing me. I wonder if they would say "why don't we just abolish club football altogether then".

Many Juventus players aren't even citizens of Torino... they live outside in the suburbs.

And hey, those people can denounce me all they want. It's their opinion. But mine is mine and it is final... supporting a nation that is not your own is RETARDED.
