The deterministic world of working with code and packages and classes is very, very different from the non-deterministic world of working with people working on code (or other non-code business functions).

I think a lot of developers make the mistake that management is a natural extension of being a decent developer. It's a whole other animal. Half the people I know who get into it hate it and back out. You have to completely pervert your perspective, as it's no longer about you or what you get done, it's about everyone else and what they get done. That's a huge leap many don't successfully make, IMO.
Yeah I can't quite imagine putting myself in that position. I've worked with a lot of people who were not productive, and I just end up doing the whole thing and letting them put their name on it, so on paper we're good. And hey, I get to do my thing and do things exactly my way so I'm not the one losing out.

I've barely been to Ireland, so I can't really comment.

Most of Scotland is pretty shit.
Most of Ireland is pretty shit. I may seem biased but most Irish people would agree with me that Galway is one of the nicest places in Ireland. Some of the other parts are awful shit holes.

Figured as much. Haven't been up there, but I did a drive through England years ago, pretty much Newcastle down to the south and back up. Really boring country landscape wise.

Would any of you recommend someone going there for vacation? Cause noone ever asked me if Poland is worth going, but if they did I would immediately say no.

I'm in the same boat; Aberdeen is one of the nicest places.

Places like Dundee and large chunks of Glasgow are horrible.

I'll be off to the bright lights of Govan on Saturday for a wee coming together with the Forces of Darkness, though. :D

Knowing you can do it better yourself is a classic manager pitfall. Instead of doing it themselves and faster, a decent manager needs to back off and entrust and mentor others to do it -- even if it's not to their perfect liking. Because a manager's role is not to do everything themselves -- that's called FAIL.

England is dull.

Scotland's landscape is much more interesting, mainly in the Highlands.

I wouldn't mind a trip to Poland.

I had an awesome time when I went to Ukraine.

So how did you get into the manager game? They sent you to a seminar or you just came in one day and started?

I would definitely 100% recommend coming to Ireland on vacation (I'm being serious). Galway, the Aran Islands, Kerry, Cork, Waterford, Wexford, and even Dublin are all nice places to visit.

And that's not including Northern Ireland. The Giants Causeway up there is pretty spectacular.
