Did you enjoy it? I did piano as a kid, but found most of my teachers really irritating so I stopped. I wish I hadn't. Now I dabble with the clarinet, as I decided one day it would be fun to teach myself to play. I can do Strangers in the Night, Greensleeves and Mozart's clarinet concerto in A major k. 622. That's about it ;)

Sheik, any good at the guitar?
I'm not the most patient person in the world, especially not as a kid. I might enjoy it more today, but back then I didn't enjoy practice, I got bored. After 5 years I quit. The high point in my music career was playing 1st violin (but rather in the back, mind you) in a concert of Schubert's 8th symphony, the unfinished one. I was struggling to keep up, but it was great fun, I loved concerts. I was 15 and the year after I quit.

That's the hard part, a lot of children can't sit still for that long and don't really appreciate it as much as they will one day.

I got into playing violin mostly because it was kinda in the air, a good chunk of my family is filled with music teachers so my first lessons were on family visits. Other kids in the family were playing too, it got me interested.

If I were to do it again today (very far from likely, mind you), it would be on different terms. I'd just do it for myself and I'd pick the piano cause I like it more.

That's really nice that so much interest was fostered by the family. But it does take so much dedication, and you do have your hands full with the course right now :)

It's not like everyone has to do everything. I'm fine with giving up music, I did that a long time ago and I never had regrets about it. Regrets about not playing the piano instead, maybe a little. But it's no big deal, I have other stuff on my mind.

If anything I know that music is a serious commitment and absolutely nothing comes from a little here and a little there. It takes years before you can play the stuff you want.

I know :( That was another part that frustrated me.

You should! I demand that you do. And learn Italian with us as well. It's just like learning music, you need a good ear for it ;)
Oh yes I will. I am planning to get a new guitar, cos my current one is a little hard to play. Besides, it was my first guitar, and I was pretty naive to walk into a store and pick up a guitar based on looks. I hope I can make a better decision now, and that'll hopefully rekindle my love for it.

Oh and Italian, definitely. I've been wanting to learn it for a long time.

My dad was obsessed with classical and opera, so he made me listen to all sorts of things. It is quite fun, though I was always sad I never really worked hard at playing anything.

Have you seen Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra? It's quite fun :)
My brother was my main musical influence. He introduced me to rock and heavy metal, from which I got my love for the guitar. I slowly gained interest towards progressive music and solo guitarists from there. I'll most likely expose my kids to the same music too one day. Though I must be wary of pop music and the local music in India.

I'll definitely check it out. Thanks.

I did a similar thing with the clarinet, i.e. I just bought one with no prior knowledge and ended up being very lucky that it wasn't a bag of nails! Mine is VERY difficult to play, though, and I will need to dish out a lot of money for an easy one. I hope your next guitar suits you better.

It will be nice for you to share your knowledge with your kids, I am looking forward to that part too. But if my kids end up only liking pop music too I will be a bit sad!

I currently have enough money to but a good guitar. But I'm afraid it might end up being a waste considering how little I play these days.
